NEWS & NOTABLES: The final roadtrip of the 2021 season awaits the Aggies this week as UC Davis heads to CSU Bakersfield and Central Coast rival Cal Poly. The Aggies currently sit in a tie for fourth with UC Riverside in the Big West Conference table with 10 points following a draw at UC Irvine and a 5-0 rout of CSUN at home this past week, jockeying for position in the 2021 Big West Tournament field as the top six teams qualify for the postseason event which begins on Nov. 4 at the home of the higher-seeded schools. UC Davis stands just one point behind Cal Poly and UC Irvine for second place and four points off the pace of league-leading UC Santa Barbara. Last week's scoring bonanza saw five different Aggie players account for the team's six goals – including a brace from freshman Keegan Walwyn-Bent against the Matadors for his first career goals – while Maximilian Arfsten recorded a pair of assists and both Andy Velasquez and Robert Mejia finished with a goal and an assist each. The five goals scored on Sunday against the Matadors were a season high and the most since UC Davis finished off a 5-0 win at UC Santa Barbara in 2017.

MEN'S TENNIS
OCT. 21-24: UC DAVIS AT ITA NORTHWEST SUPER REGIONAL (LLOYD NORDSTROM TENNIS CENTER – SEATTLE, WASH.)

NEWS & NOTABLES: The freshman duo of Ryan Morgan and Ryan Torres will be making a trip to Seattle this week, advancing to the ITA Northwest Super Regionals hosted by Washington after a stellar showing at last week's ITA Regionals in Moraga, Calif. The tandem advanced to the doubles finals of the main draw with wins over pairs from Santa Clara, two teams from Sacramento State, and another from host Saint Mary's, before falling to Stanford's Aryan Chaudhary and Tomas Kopczynski in the finals. Morgan also reached the round of 16 in consolation singles after dropping his first round match in main draw, while Torres won his first round match over Benjamin Campi of Nevada in straight sets. Other main draw first-round singles winners included Andras Necz (def. Daniel Dudockin of Nevada) and Brett Brinkman (def. Johan Garpered of San Francisco), who both won in straight sets to advance to the second round.

WOMEN'S SOCCER
OCT. 21: HAWAI'I AT UC DAVIS (AGGIE SOCCER FIELD), 4 p.m.
Watch Live | Live Stats | Tickets

NEWS & NOTABLES: The homestretch is here for the UC Davis women's soccer team, which hosts Hawai'i in its only match of the week. The Aggies are fresh off a split last week that saw them fall in a 1-0 decision to Long Beach State before edging UC Irvine on the road by a 2-1 score. The win kept UC Davis firmly in the mix for one of four spots in this year's Big West Conference Tournament as the Aggies stand tied for fourth with the Anteaters and Cal State Fullerton at 12 points with two weeks remaining in the regular season, trailing second-place Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara (16 points apiece) and league-leading Cal Poly (18 points). The top four teams in the final standings qualify for the league's postseason event. Sophomores Risa Yamada and Leslie Fregoso each finished with a goal and an assist in the win over the Anteaters, while sophomore Sammie Ruelas added another helper on Yamada's opening goal, as UC Davis did not surrender a goal during the run of play with UCI converting a penalty in the 87th minute to cut its deficit in half. The goals were the sixth of the year for both Yamada and Fregoso, while the latter collected her third game-winner of the year. Fregoso's 19 points (six goals, seven assists) are the most since Allison Kelly had 19 in 2011, while the seven assists extend her school Division I record and are the most since Cynthia Rail's 10 helpers in 2001.

In Moraga, senior Sara Tsukamoto and sophomore Yana Gurevich met in the A Flight back draw, with the elder Aggie taking the win in straight sets, while Gurevich teamed up with freshman Arianna Stavropoulos to win the B Flight doubles draw over a Colorado duo. Stavropoulos also advanced to the B Flight singles championship, while freshman Maddi Page advanced to the C Flight singles semis.

NEWS & NOTABLES: After spending the last nine matches away from home, the UC Davis men's water polo team will not leave the friendly confines of the Schaal Aquatics Center for the rest of the regular season, opening a run of six consecutive home matches this week with a doubleheader against Western Water Polo Association rivals Air Force and Biola on Friday. The Aggies, who have won their last 11 straight WWPA contests, continued their unbeaten run through conference play with a hard-fought 10-7 win at Santa Clara and a big 21-6 victory at Fresno Pacific, before falling at No. 4 Stanford to close out a busy week. Sophomore Aleix Aznar Beltran finished with seven of the team's 10 goals against the Broncos, as UC Davis used a fourth-quarter flurry to pull away. Those seven scores matched freshman Hal Goulter's seven-goal output against Mount St. Mary's back on Sept. 4 for the most by an Aggie this year, both standing tied for third on the school's all-time single-match list. Levi Murtaugh then scored four times as part of a six-point day against the Sunbirds, with Michael Plastino and Connor Norton adding five points apiece and Ben Fleming chipping in with a hat trick.

NEWS & NOTABLES: Fresh off one of the biggest wins of the season, the UC Davis women's volleyball team heads to Southern California this week as the first round of Big West Conference play wraps up, taking on Cal State Fullerton and Long Beach State on back-to-back nights. Last week, the Aggies battled CSUN at home in a five-set defeat, staving off elimination with a win in set four before being edged in the fifth, but followed that up with a huge four-set victory over UC Santa Barbara two days later, handing the Gauchos their first conference loss of the year and ending a six-match skid of their own. Freshman Amara Aimufua logged her 10th double-digit kill performance of the year with 16 against the Matadors to lead three Aggies in double figures on the night as UC Davis finished with a season-high 11 aces – the most in a match since 2015. Against UCSB, freshman Olivia Utterback logged her first career triple-double (11 kills, 10 digs, 10 blocks) and junior Josephine Ough finished with a career-high 12 blocks in the win – tied for the second-most blocks in a match in school history and the most by a Division I player in the nation this year. UC Davis out-blocked UC Santa Barbara, 19-6, for the night, falling just one shy of the school single-match four-set record set at Cal Poly Pomona in 1998.

WOMEN'S SWIMMING & DIVING
OCT. 23: UC DAVIS AT NEVADA & VS. CAL STATE EAST BAY (LOMBARDI POOL – RENO, NEV.), 11 a.m.

NEWS & NOTABLES: After rolling over Pepperdine in the first dual of the Matt Macedo Era in the pool, the UC Davis swimming and diving team looks to keep the momentum going on the road this weekend, heading up the hill to Reno, Nev., to take on host Nevada and Cal State East Bay in a tri-meet on Saturday. The Aggies' resounding 207-87 win over the Waves at Schaal Aquatics Center saw UC Davis win 13 of the 14 individual events and take both relays en route to its highest score since defeating Dixie State, 285-78, on Nov. 9, 2019. Junior Dani Fasan won both the 100 breast and 100 free, freshman Sam Rhodes won the 200 free and 500 free, and senior diver Taylor Hornberger swept both the 1- and 3-meter diving competitions.

NEWS & NOTABLES: The 18th "Battle for the Golden Horseshoe" will be contested in San Luis Obispo, Calif., this weekend as the No. 10 Aggies head down the coast to take on Cal Poly. The unanimous No. 10-ranked team in the nation, UC Davis jumped up in the polls after rolling past visiting Northern Colorado, 32-3, last week on Homecoming as Trent Tompkins rushed for a pair of touchdowns, Ulonzo Gilliam, Jr., collected his 13th 100-yard rushing game of the season, and the Aggies racked up 211 yards on the ground en route to the win. The Aggies hold a 24-20-2 all-time record in the series with Cal Poly, and a 10-7 mark since the rivalry was branded as "The Battle for the Golden Horseshoe." UC Davis has won four straight in the series, including a 73-24 victory in the shortened spring 2021 campaign, and has outscored the Mustangs by a 204-86 count in that stretch.

NEWS & NOTABLES: It's "Senior Day" at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility as UC Davis welcomes Bay Area rival Stanford to town for a high noon non-conference battle between the America East Conference foes on Sunday. UC Davis is looking to snap a four-match skid after falling to California in its penultimate home contest of the season on Oct. 17. The Aggies and the Cardinal have already met one time this year with Stanford defending its home turf in a 3-1 victory. Shea Gavin had her team's goal in that match off a feed from Skylar Richards, while goalkeeper Kalli Wagnon finished with four saves. Along with Gavin, fellow seniors Izzy Porco, Milou Korthouwer, Madison Theodore, Sophia Lizalde, Catherine Potente, Audrey Matthew, Siena Dwyer, and Brooke Sanchez, are scheduled to be honored prior to the start of the contest.
