SERIES NOTES…
UC Davis leads the all-time series with UC San Diego by a 12-3 count, having won the last five meetings overall between the two schools. The two programs have not met since Feb. 21, 2004, when both were members of the NCAA Division II California Collegiate Athletic Association, with the Aggies posting a 72-66 victory over the Tritons at The Pavilion. UC Davis is 5-1 against UCSD at home (with the location of three matches in the series unknown), having won the last two meetings in Northern California. The Aggies won seven of the nine meetings with the Tritons as members of the CCAA from 1998-2004.
ABOUT THE TRITONS…
UC San Diego, in its first year as a member of the Big West Conference, enters the week with a 2-1 overall record — all three coming since the start of league play. The Tritons have won two straight, splitting a back-to-back with Cal Poly on Jan. 1 (L, 90-68) and Jan. 2 (W, 74-63) before clinching a last-second victory over UC Santa Barbara by the score of 73-71 in their last outing on Jan. 16. Sydney Brown leads a trio of UCSD players averaging double digits at 15.0 ppg to go with 9.0 rpg and shooting .516 from the field. Tyla Turner (14.7 ppg) — who nailed the game-winner against the Gauchos — and Parker Montgomery (12.3 ppg) are also in double figures. UC San Diego began its transition from Division II to Division I back in July and all games against Tritons will count in the Big West standings. However, the Tritons will not be eligible for the Big West Tournament until they complete their transition in July of 2024.
AGGIE STORYLINES...
• To date, only one other Division I school — of those who started the regular season — has played fewer games this season than the Aggies entering Friday's contest. Merrimack College of the Northeast Conference has yet to take the floor, scheduled to face Fairleigh Dickinson on Jan. 23.
• After waiting 264 days between the final game of the halted 2019-20 campaign and the season opener against San Francisco on Nov. 25, UC Davis will have waited 59 more days for the ball to be in the air again when it tips off against league newcomer UC San Diego.
• All told, the Aggies have had 14 games cancelled, thus far, either due to COVID concerns with other programs or a December Yolo County health order that forced UC Davis to pause activity indefinitely.
• The Aggies have not played since an 82-75 home victory over San Francisco on Nov. 25 at the Pavilion, led by 19 points from sophomore
Evanne Turner, who hit her first seven shots of the game and led a group of five starters in double figures.
• Senior
Cierra Hall added 15 points and 11 rebounds against the Dons, junior
Sage Stobbart chipped in 15 points, nine rebounds, and five blocks, while junior
Kayla Konrad and senior
Mackenzie Trpcic finished with 10 points apiece.
• Since 2007-08, UC Davis is 7-6 in Big West openers after having its five-game winning streak in such games snapped last season at UC Riverside (75-70). Friday marks only the fourth time in 14 league openers that the Aggies open the conference schedule at home.
• #ProtectThePav: The Aggies are a combined 50-7 at The Pavilion during their championship streak (dating back to 2016-17), having won 10 of their last 11. UC Davis has posted a winning record at home in each of the last seven seasons entering 2020-21.
• UC San Diego joins CSU Bakersfield as newcomers to the Big West this season. The Aggies and Tritons, however, have a long history from their respective Division II days as members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association from 1998-2004 and four games during the 1970s and early 1980s.
• Despite playing only one game thus far this season, UC Davis continues to stand among the College Insider Mid-Major poll as of Jan. 19, entering the week ranked No. 23 in the nation.
• The Aggies have been ranked as high as No. 15 in the mid-major poll back on Dec. 8 and have been among the top 20 every week this season, extending its run to 10 consecutive weeks dating back to the final 2019-20 poll.
• The No. 15 ranking is the highest standing for UC Davis in that poll since the Aggies finished the 2017-18 season ranked No. 12 in the final mid-major rankings.
