UC Davis splits opening day at Triton Invite

LA JOLLA, Calif. — UC Davis women's water polo advances through the consolation bracket after dropping the opening game against No. 19 Indiana in a double overtime/sudden death situation, and defeating Division III Pomona-Pitzer to close the first day at the Triton Invitational.

In the first game, Chloe Robinson made the double hat trick with six total goals, followed by Noelle Wijnbelt's hat trick.

UC Davis was behind at the end of each period, getting goals from Wijnbelt and Robinson to end the first half 3-6. Trailing by as many as four points at 2:37 in the third, the Aggies scored six of the game's next eight goals to even things up at 10-10 on a power play goal from Robinson with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation. Robinson recorded her second hat trick in the fourth quarter alone.

The first overtime saw both teams finish scoreless, resulting in a second OT period.

In the second, the Hoosiers struck first on a goal from Megan Abarta to go up 11-10 with a minute remaining, before Wijnbelt completed her hat trick to send the game into a sudden victory situation. Indiana scored quickly with another goal from Abarta to end the game 12-11 in favor of the Hoosiers.

In the second game of the day, the Aggies jumped out to an early lead over Division III powerhouse Pomona-Pitzer, leading 9-1 with goals from six different players. Wijnbelt recorded her only two of the game, one in each quarter, with Devin Holcomb, McKenna Martin, Cassidy Smithson, Alyssa Lengtat, and Julia Hartmann also contributing.

Holcomb went on to earn her first career hat trick, with Smithson earning a hat trick of her own, and Lengtat finding the cage twice. Taylor and Abbey Pfefferlen recorded one each in the win, with Taylor and Ari Momen recording two assists apiece.

UC Davis continues its bid for ninth place with a noon game against No. 22 CSUN in a non-conference counting clash. The Aggies will advance to play LMU or the winner of Marist and San Diego State no earlier than 4 PM in the Canyonview Pool.
