Aggies host Sunbirds in Sunday matinee

UC Davis finally returns to the court for the first time since opening day

DAVIS, Calif. — After opening its season with an 82-75 victory over San Francisco in its season opener prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, the UC Davis women's basketball team returns to the court on Sunday (Dec. 6) against NCAA Division II foe Fresno Pacific. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. at The Pavilion.

SERIES NOTES…
The Aggies are 4-0 all-time against Fresno Pacific, but the two teams have not met in an official game since the 2002-03 season when UC Davis clipped the Sunbirds, 83-66, at home. The two programs first met during the 1988-89 campaign, which ended in a 66-63 Aggie victory, with UC Davis also posting victories in 1997 (77-61) and 1999 (78-63).

ABOUT THE SUNBIRDS…
Fresno Pacific is coming off a 90-39 exhibition loss at California Baptist on opening day. Freshman guard Lydia Manu led the Sunbirds with eight points to go with four rebounds, while junior forward Megan Sheret added a team-best nine rebounds. Coming off a season that saw FPU finish 17-13 overall and reach the semifinals of the PacWest Conference Tournament. The Sunbirds enter the season ranked No. 10 in the D2SIDA preseason poll. Senior Jessica Malazarte is the leading returning scorer, averaging 15.5 points (No. 8 in the PacWest) and finishing with 107 assists.

AGGIE STORYLINES...
• After opening the season ranked No. 18 in the preseason College Insider Mid-Major poll, the Aggies jumped two spots to No. 16 in the nation as of the Dec. 1 rankings.
• It is the highest standing for UC Davis in that poll since the Aggies finished the 2017-18 season ranked No. 12 in the final mid-major rankings.
• UC Davis' season-opening win over San Francisco was its first win in a season opener since 2017-18 when the Aggies defeated Washington State, 91-76.
• The 82 points against Dons were the most in a season opener since that win over the Cougars.
• Sophomore Evanne Turner finished with a team-high 19 points to lead five starters in double figures against San Francisco, including hitting her first seven shots of the night.
• The Aggies had five starters in double figures for the first time since a win over Nevada on Dec. 1, 2018
• Senior Cierra Hall added 15 points and 11 rebounds (as well as five assists) against San Francisco for her fourth career double-double
• Junior Sage Stobbart added five blocks to her 15-point, nine-rebounds performance against the Dons — the second-highest single-game total of her career behind only her school record-tying seven blocks at UC Irvine last season
• Now with 60 career blocks, Stobbart moved past Celia Marfone (2012-16) for sixth on the school's Division I career list, and is just six blocks behind Lauren Juric (2007-12) and Marly Anderson (2016-18) for ninth on the all-time chart.
• Newcomers Lena Svanholm and Allie Carreon made their Aggie debuts against San Francisco, finishing with eight and three points, respectively
• UC Davis was an unanimous pick to claim its fifth consecutive Big West crown in 2020-21 by both the media and coaches. The Aggies picked up six of the 11 first-place votes (101 points overall) from the coaches and 13 of the 20 media first-place votes (207 points overall).
