LOS ANGELES -- Nir Gross and
Kyle Reilly each finished with hat tricks on the day and the No. 9 UC Davis men's water polo team had its chances in overtime, but a goal by the No. 11 Tritons at the death pushed them past the Aggies 13-12 in the second sudden victory period to close out the 2019 MPSF Invitational on Sunday afternoon at the Burns Aquatics Center on the campus of Loyola Marymount.
Another back-and-forth contest between Western Water Polo Association rivals saw the Aggies (7-6 overall) rally from down a goal with just over two minutes to play as
Ian Ambidge found the back of the cage with 2:05 remaining to tie the game at 10-all, and
Keenan Anderson gave his team the lead with 1:10 left to go in regulation thanks to his only score of the contest.
However, the Tritons had one last push, working the clock to tie the score with 35 seconds remaining on a goal by Karlo Krmek. Both teams had attempt at the end, but Gross' attempt hit the post and Krmek missed the cage, sending the contet to overtime.
UCSD goalkeeper Jack Turner turned away a pair in the first three minutes and stopped another in the fourth minute of overtime before Gross broke through again, scoring at even strength with 1:24 remaining for a 12-11 lead. Again, the Tritons came back finding the back of the cage 25 seconds later off the hand of Calder Hilde-Jones with less than a minute to play to knot the game at 12.
Turner then denied
Jack Stafford on the power play out of a timeout after the Aggies had drawn a kick-out with four seconds left, sending both teams to sudden victory.
Neither team was able to get a shot off in the first sudden victory, sending the match to a third overtime where UC Davis turned up the pressure. The Aggies won the sprint, but missed on their first attempt, while subsequent attempts by
Holden Tamblyn, Reilly, and
Max Somple were all turned away.
George Kuesis then drew a kick-out off a Triton turnover with 39 seconds remaining, but Somple drew iron, giving the ball back to UC San Diego, and the Tritons did not miss, netting the game-winner by Cooper Milton with two seconds left for the win.
Michael Plastino added a pair of goals, while four other Aggies finished with a score in the loss, while goalkeeper
Jonah Addington finished with 12 saves, five steals, and three assists. Turner stopped 22 shots for the Tritons as UC Davis unleashed 41 for the match.
UC Davis returns to action on Friday (Oct. 4) at 7 p.m., traveling to Stockton, Calif., to take on Pacific.
