PULLMAN, Wash. -- UC Davis sophomore Thomas Hutchison drained back-to-back birdies on the back nine holes to fire a 1-under-par 69 in the final round of the NCAA Pullman Regional, hosted at Palouse Ridge Golf Course Wednesday afternoon. The San Jose, California, native finished in a tie for 44th place with 54-hole total of 211 strokes.
The NCAA regional caps an outstanding senior for the Pioneer High School alumnus and current second-year mathematics student. Hutchison, who ranked 74th nationally entering the regional, captured Big West Conference Player of the Year and first-team All-Big West honors just one week prior. He is just the fourth UC Davis player to earn an individual at-large spot at an NCAA Div. I regional, joining a list that includes teammate Ryan Han (2018) and assistant coach Tyler Raber (2013).
Hutchison's 69 on Wednesday represented his low round for the week. He sank 15 pars during the final day, plus birdies on the 626-yard 10th and the 175-yard 11th. Hutchison also closed out his season with a 71.00 average round, putting him third in the program record book. Only Matt Hansen (2013-14) and Louie Bishop (2006-07) have averaged better than 71 for an entire season in school history.
BYU's Rhett Rasmussen fired his second consecutive 63 to claim the individual title, while UC Santa Barbara's Zach Smith captured the Pullman Regional's lone at-large spot to the national tournament, held May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Smith fired a 5-under 65 on Wednesday, staying a stroke ahead of USF's Tim Widing and South Carolina's Scott Stevens for the individual berth.
No. 20 Texas A&M captured the team title with 807 total strokes, 33 under par and two ahead of runner-up BYU. No. 5 Oklahoma finished in third place with 810 strokes.
