PULLMAN, Wash. -- UC Davis sophomore
Thomas Hutchison sank his birdie on the 551-yard par-5 18th to finish his day at even-par 70, moving himself up nine spots on the individual leaderboard on the second day of the NCAA Pullman Region men's golf championship at Palouse Ridge Golf Course Tuesday afternoon.
The mathematics major from San Jose's Pioneer High enters the final round in a sizable tie for 49th place at 142 strokes, 2 over par and 12 behind the overall leader. The regional is played in Palouse Ridge's par-70, 7,232-yard course.
Oklahoma's Blaine Hale leads the 75-man field with a 10-under 130 total. Three players, including two individual qualifiers Tim Widing of USF and Zach Smith of UC Santa Barbara, share second place at 8-under 132. No. 20 Texas A&M leads the team race with a 23-under total of 537 strokes. No. 5 Oklahoma and No. 8 Georgia Tech are close behind at 540 and 541, respectively.
The top five teams and top individual not on an advancing team will move on to the NCAA finals, held May 24-29 at Blessings Golf Club in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Hutchison is the fourth UC Davis player to earn an individual at-large berth to the NCAA regional stage, along with teammate
Ryan Han (2015 and 2018), current assistant coach
Tyler Raber (2013) and Austin Graham (2010).
The NCAA Pullman Regional concludes with an 18-hole final round on Wednesday.
