PULLMAN, Wash. – UC Davis sophomore Thomas Hutchison carded a 2-over-par 72 to close out his action in a tie for 58th place after the first 18 holes at the NCAA Pullman Region men's golf championship at Palouse Ridge Golf Club Monday. The mathematics major from San Jose, California, is the lone Aggie to qualify for the tournament.
Hutchison went through a rollercoaster of a front nine but managed to shoot par, birdie and par from the seventh through ninth holes for an even-par 35 at the turn. He added a 37 on the back nine en route to his final Monday total of 72.
Three players shared the top of the leaderboard with matching 6-under 74 scores: Texas A&M's Chandler Phillips, Oklahoma's Garett Reband, and Brigham Young's Carson Lundell. Phillips is ranked 27th nationally by Golfstat while Reband is 61st. For his part, Hutchison entered the tourney at No. 74.
Six of the 14 participating teams will advance from the Pullman Regional to the national finals. No. 20 Texas A&M leads that bid at 11-under 269, one stroke in front of No. 5 Oklahoma. No. 8 Georgia Tech (271), BYU (272) and Michigan State (273) occupy third through fifth place, respectively, with four teams sharing that sixth spot in the standings.
Hutchison, the Big West Conference's 2019 Player of the Year, earned an individual at-large spot at the Pullman Regional, which resumes on Tuesday morning. He will tee off on the front starting at 9:20 a.m.
