Aggies leave their mark at the Big West Championships

Full Results (PDF)

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — Continuing an impressive opening day at the Pauley Track Facility, the Aggies maintained their Day One standings to finish third on the men's side and fourth on the women's. The men recorded 117.5 points to be one of three teams to score over a hundred points, while the women's team finished with 108.5 points, returning to triple-digits for the ninth time in the last ten years.

In total, the Aggies collected four event wins, all occurring on the final day of the Big West Championships.

The first champion was crowned in the men's pole vault, where sophomore Jered Española was the lone competitor to clear a bar above five meters, and finished atop the standings with a 5.11m vault. Española became the second consecutive Aggie to win the event after school record holder Marc Toney won the title in 2018 with a 17-03.75, and just the second in the history of UC Davis in the Big West.

To kick off the track portion of the day, the women's 4x100m relay team stunned the conference, racing to the second title in the last three years, and second since joining the Big West. The team of Natsumi McGee, Kirsten Carter, Kierra Davis, and Kieana Butler crossed in 45.21 to be the fifth-fastest relay in UC Davis history, and were a second faster than the second place Cal State Fullerton as Long Beach was disqualified after the race.

Continuing her stellar freshman season, Carter was pushed to the limit in the women's 400m, but managed to hold off the top-seeded Lena Kandissounon from CSUN to claim the event outright. Carter crossed in 53.85, just two hundredths of a second quicker than Kandissounon, and improves to second all-time at UC Davis as just the second woman to finish under 54 seconds.

The final crown of the meet belonged to senior Jordy Ceja in the men's 5000m. Ceja, fresh off a third place finish in a highly contested men's 10,000m the night the before, raced the perfect race as he stayed mid-pack most of the way through, before breaking out in a stellar 800m. Crossing the line three seconds ahead of UC Santa Barbara's Brian Schulz, Ceja nearly hit a personal best time in his 37th lap of the weekend, garnering 16 points in his final season on the track.

Although there were only four overall champions, the Aggies earned several podium finishes and all-time marks. In the field events, defending champions Kyle Clancy (high jump) and Drew Xandrine-Anderson (triple jump) took second place for the highest finishes on day two in the field, behind Española.

Completing a full sweep of PR's, senior Drake Foote hit a personal best distance in the men's javelin to take fourth, officially recording improvement in every event he's competed in, from the 110m hurdles to the overall decathlon. Foote also finished tied for eighth in the high jump, claiming a half a point.

Senior Erinn Beattie raced to a new PR of 1:00.77 in the 400m hurdles, remaining sixth in the record books. Beattie then ran the third leg of a 4x400m relay that nearly replicated what the 4x100m relay team did. With a season-best time of 3:40.89, Flora Oliveira, Carter, Beattie, and Mikaela Adolphus are now tied for fifth in the UC Davis all-time list, and took a very narrow second place finish in the final event of the Big West Championship meet.

In the shorter distances, senior Nigel Burnett and Brandon Jetter finished a hundredth of a second apart, with Burnett leaning to a 10.68 third place finish. On the women's side, the trio of Butler, McGee, and Davis finished fiftth through sixth, running 12.00, 12.01, and 12.02, respectively.

Moving into the 200m, Carter earned her fourth podium finish with a third place 23.86, while Anthony Easter crossed third in the 400m hurdles with his second time under 52 seconds this season. Xolan Brown locked down the second place finish in the 800m, coming from behind to claim his positioning in a sprint for the finish, earning the extra two points thanks to an eight hundredths of a second edge.

With a handful of top finishes in over five events, Clancy earned 23 points to claim the prestigious Athlete of the Meet honor, awarded to the most valuable athlete of the week. This is Clancy's second consecutive award, as he finished third in the decathlon, second in the high jump, fifth in the long jump, and fourth in the 110m hurdles.

The Aggies will now wait for the conclusion of other conference meets around the country to determine the top qualifiers that will advance to the NCAA West Prelims, hosted by Sacramento State from May 23-25th.
