CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Sophomore Thomas Hutchison fired an even-par 72 while freshman Daniel Kim shot a team-low 69 to lead UC Davis in the final round of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic men's collegiate golf tournament at Whirlwind Golf Club Tuesday. Hutchison finished the event in a five-way tie for sixth place while the Aggies closed out in seventh place among the 20-team field.
Kim birdied 5 and 6 to begin his final round, then enjoyed birdie 3s on the 11th and 16th en route to his 3-under-par performance, his best since carding a 4-under 67 at the Alister MacKenzie Invite back in October. He finished in a tie for 11th place with a 210 total, moving up nine spots from his Monday position.Â
Hutchison struggled out of the gates, falling to 3-over during the first three holes, but then rallied back for five birdies the rest of the way to save a 72 – his 15th round of par or better for the season. He closed out the tourney with a 7-under 209 total, his best event to par since he won the Windon Memorial Classic at 11-under last September.
Redshirt freshman Shane Muldowney scored a 3-over 75 on Tuesday to finish in t56th place at 220 strokes, four ahead of senior teammate Jesse Bratz in t77th. Senior Ryan Han rounded out the Aggie lineup in a tie for 116th. Oddly, freshman and individual entrant Natheethorn Teacharuangchit would have been UC Davis' No. 3 scorer, turning in a second consecutive 72 round to finish with a chop of 43rd place.
UCLA pulled away to the team title with its 54-hole total of 841 strokes, 23 under par. Cal State Fullerton and Grand Canyon finished second and third with totals of 848 and 850, respectively. The Aggies totaled 295 on Tuesday for a 1-under 864 team score.
UC Davis returns home to close out the regular season with the three-day, 15-team El Macero Classic from Friday through Sunday. The official tournament site can be found at www.elmaceroclassic.com.
