CHANDLER, Ariz. -- Sophomore Thomas Hutchison carded a 6-under-par 66 in the opening round followed by an even-par 72 in the second, holding a tie for third place among 119 total players to close out Monday's portion of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic men's collegiate golf tournament at Whirlwind Golf Club.
The Aggies also enter the final round in fifth place among the team race, compiling a 36-hole total of 568 during Monday's action. They combined for a 7-under 281 total in the opening round, then a 1-under 287 in the second.
Hutchison, a mathematics major from San Jose, California, enjoyed a clean sheet in Monday's first round: six birdies and 12 pars en route to his best round to par since his 8-under 64 at the Windon Memorial back in September. He led the field at the day's midpoint, then sank another five birdies during the afternoon session to stay in contention for the individual title.Â
Hutchison sits just one stroke behind the individual leaders, Wyoming's John Murdock and UCLA's Cole Madey, who enter Tuesday's final round with 136-stroke totals.
Freshman Daniel Kim posted two rounds under par, carding a 70 and 71 to grab a share of 20th place on the individual leaderboard. He finished the back nine particularly well, draining birdies on both 17 and 18 in each round. Redshirt freshman Shane Muldowney and senior Jessie Bratz are each tied for 49th place. Muldowney fired a 73 and a 72 for his two rounds while Bratz had the opposite day with scores of 72 and 73.
Fifth-year senior Ryan Han rounds out the Aggie lineup in a tie for 111th place, with scores of 79 and 78 in his two Monday rounds, respectively. True freshman Natheethorn Teacharuangchit, entered as an individual competitor, sits in T56th with a 74 and 72 on the day.
UCLA leads the 20-team field at 18-under 558, two strokes ahead of Cal State Fullerton and four in front of Grand Canyon. The Cowboy Classic takes place on Whirlwind's par-72, 7,218-yard Cattail Course.
