Beattie closes Bryan Clay with heptathlon school record; Anderson hits PR in 10K

AZUSA, Calif. — To conclude the combined events at the Bryan Clay Invitational, senior standout Erinn Beattie finished seventh overall in the top grouping, and fourth among all collegiate athletes in competition with a new school record of 5,671 points in the women's heptathlon. At the Mt. SAC Relays, junior Sarah Anderson raced to a nearly two minute personal best in the women's invitational 10,000m to highlight day two in Southern California.

Business ran as usual in the long jump and javelin for Beattie, setting herself up for a stellar finish. After two personal best marks on day one in the high jump and the 200m, Beattie continued her streak, running a blistering 2:09.74 in the 800m — the final event of the heptathlon. Beattie's time was not only a three-second PR, but it earned her an impressive 968 points, and landed her in the ninth spot in the UC Davis record books for the 800m, and fourth in the Big West. Thanks to her incredible finish in the 800m, Beattie wrapped up her final day with a total of 5,671 points, over 200 points higher than her previous personal best and school record of 5,458 points. Along with her auto-USATF qualifying mark in the women's high jump, Beattie now ranks among the NCAA's best in the heptathlon, as her total will sit around seventh when the marks are entered on Track & Field Results Reporting System (TFRRS).

Also finishing her first heptathlon of the season was junior Sydney Holmes, who recorded 4,305 points to move up a spot to ninth in her group, bettering her tenth-place day one finish.

In the men's decathlon, senior Kyle Clancy opened the day with a 14.21 110m hurdles time, moving up to fifth all-time in the UC Davis record book, and earning him a meet-best 948 points with the new PR. Clancy's mark spurred him to a 7,171 point finish, good for third in Group 3, but just ten points short of his personal best, set in the decathlon at the 2018 Big West Championships. Competing alongside Clancy, senior Drake Foote hit a PR in three out of his five events, but a no height in the pole vault set him back from what would have been a substantial personal best in the decathlon, as he finished with 6,261 points. In the 110m hurdles, Foote raced to a 15.08 finish, bettering his PR by 0.02, before throwing nearly a meter farther than his previous best in the discus, recording a 37.45m (122-10) heave. To wrap up his day, Foote cut a second off his 1500m time, and crossed in 5:00.94.

Later in the evening, the distance carnival portion of the Azusa Pacific meet commenced, featuring three Aggies in the 5000m runs. In alternating heats, senior Jordy Ceja was the first in action in heat five, where he put up a 14:37.25 to finish tenth in his section, and seventh among collegiate athletes. Junior Julia Lemak raced in the fifth heat of the women's 5000m, and crossed 20th in her heat, and 18th among student-athletes. To close the night in Azusa for the Aggies, freshman Adam Fragola ran in the eighth heat, crossing 32nd, with a time of 15:22.90.

As the lone runner representing the Aggies at the Mt. SAC Relays, Anderson blazed to a Big West Conference-leading 34:41.69, shattering her previous PR of 36:14.36 set at the 2018 SF State Distance Carnival. Anderson is within the top-40 in the West Region with tonight's performance, putting herself in good position to qualify for the NCAA West Regionals in May. Although she finished in the top-20 of the invitational 10K, Anderson was in the top-ten of all collegiate athletes in the invitational heat, and is now seventh all-time at UC Davis.

The Aggies continue the week at the Azusa Pacific Invite on Friday, before heading to the 25th Beach Invitational on Saturday.
