BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Bettering her seed by five places, senior Erinn Beattie finished fourth overall in the pentathlon at the NCAA Indoor Championships on Friday with 4,293 points — a new school record. Beattie's top-eight finish earned her a spot on the podium, and First Team All-America honors.
Beattie started the day strong in the 60m hurdles, running a 8.68 to PR by 0.01, but missed the school record by just as much. Although Beattie remains second all-time in the UC Davis indoor record book in the 60H, the result put her 14th out of 16 athletes, demonstrating the elite level of competition.
Continuing to the high jump, Beattie's specialty, she broke her own indoor school record with a height of 1.84m (6-00.05) on her second attempt. This is now equal to her outdoor record for the high jump, and moved Beattie from 14th place overall to third heading into the shot put.
Throwing her second-best distance in the shot, Beattie threw well enough to keep her within range, logging a 10.90m heave, and fell to fifth place. The mark would've been a PR if it weren't for Beattie's outstanding perfomance at the MPSF Championships two weeks ago, where she threw an 11.30m
However, the final two events, the long jump and the 800m, are right up Beattie's alley, as she broke her own indoor record in the long jump, and ran a season-best time in the 800m.
Beattie jumped 5.89m for a new record, and finished fifth in the event, but dropped an additional place to sit sixth leading into the final event of the pentathlon.
Striding hard through the last lap, Beattie raced to a fifth-place finish in the 800m, running a 2:15.86 — her season best — bumping her two places to finish fourth overall in the pent.
Beattie returns to the track Saturday for the individual high jump, where she is seeded tied for sixth place going into the event. Unfortunately, ESPN3 will not begin streaming until after the high jump is finished, but there will be Live Results available.
