Box Score WASHINGTON, D.C. - Junior attacker Amanda Outcalt and senior midfielder Taylor Cuenin each performed hat tricks while sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Mathieson tallied a career-high 19 saves, but a hot second-half start could not erase an early deficit as UC Davis lost to 22nd-ranked Georgetown, 20-11, in collegiate women's lacrosse action at Cooper Field Sunday.
The Aggies move to 6-6 for the year. The Hoyas improve to 6-4 overall.
Mathieson, making just her second career start, faced a total of 52 shots in more than doubling her previous high of eight saves. Her 19 stops are the most since fellow New Jerseyan Kai Murphy tallied that many at Old Dominion in 2014, and joins a five-way tie for third in the UC Davis record book.
Outcalt netted four goals with an assist while Cuenin scored three. Junior midfielder Kate Graham added two goals, with Sorana Larson and Mar Alvear each chipping in one. Freshman Christie Coulter earned a career-high two assists. Alvear also led UC Davis in the "hustle" stats, matching teammate Maddie Myers' total of four draw controls while recording three caused turnovers and three ground balls.
Senior midfielder Francesca Whitehurst netted five goals for Georgetown, while senior attacker Taylor Gebhardt contributed three goals and two assists. Whitehurst also won seven draw controls, helping the Hoyas win that battle by a 20-13 margin.
GU stormed to a 6-1 lead in the first 16 minutes of play, with only an unassisted Taylor Cuenin strike in the sixth minute putting UC Davis on the board. Whitehurst scored twice in another 3-0 run that later pushed the Hoyas up to a 10-3 advantage with 88 seconds left in the half.
All four Outcalt goals came in a span of about 21 minutes. She converted an assist from Coulter with 1:09 left in the first half, then delivered additional tallies in the 31st, 37th and 40th minutes, helping to close the gap to just 11-8. However, GU responded with three unanswered to stretch the margin to 14-8. The Aggies cut the deficit to four goals on two occasions before surrendering five unanswered Georgetown goals in the final eight minutes.
The Hoyas outshot their hosts by a 52-24 margin and – true to their No. 12 national ranking in turnovers – committed just nine giveaways for the game.
Cuenin's three goals raises her career total to 133, moving her ahead of Cal Aggie Athletics Hall of Famer Allison Stonebarger (1998-2000) for sixth on the school's career leaderboard. She now needs three to match Hannah Mirza (2010-13) for fifth. Outcalt's assist joins her into a three-way tie for second on the Aggie single-season list with Kelly Albin (2004) and Christina Corsa (2009).
UC Davis continues its three-game spring break trip at UMBC on Wednesday. First draw takes place at 2 p.m. Pacific.
