WAIKOLOA, Hawaii -- Sophomore Thomas Hutchison carded a 2-under-par 70 to lead UC Davis in Thursday's opening round of the Amer Ari Intercollegiate men's golf tournament at the Waikoloa Kings' Course. He finished the first day in a sizable tie for 30th place overall, while the Aggies hold 15th place among the 18-team field.
No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA champions Oklahoma State leads the team race at 21-under 267, while No. 29 Texas Tech and No. 45 Oregon are second and third at 269 and 271 strokes, respectively. In fact, seven of the Amer Ari teams rank among Golfstat's top 30. The Cowboys also have two of the top three individuals, with No. 53 Zach Bauchou leading the medalist race with his 9-under 63.
Hutchison, ranked 48th nationally by Golfstat, drained three birdies on each of the front and back nine holes en route to his Thursday 70. Senior Tanner Hughes birdied the fourth and sixth holes to close out his first round with an even-par 72 and a share of 53rd place. A pair of fifth-years, Jesse Bratz and Ryan Han, rounded out the UC Davis scoring with rounds of 73 and 74. Freshman Daniel Kim shot a 78 for the Aggies.
The Aggies enter the second day with a team total of 289 strokes, one over par and a stroke ahead of 31st-ranked Stanford in the team standings.
The Amer Ari takes place on the par-72, 7,074-yard Kings' Course for two more 18-hole rounds through Saturday. UC Davis will tee off from the 11th through 14th holes in Friday's 7:30 shotgun start.
