LA QUINTA, Calif. – Sophomore Thomas Hutchison fired a 2-under-par 69 for a share of sixth place on the individual leaderboard, leading UC Davis after the first day of action at The Prestige Presented By Charles Schwab, held at the PGA WEST's Greg Norman Course Monday.
No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA champions Oklahoma State leads the 16-team field with a 6-under 278 total, one stroke in front of No. 16 LSU. UC Davis ended the first 18 holes in 15th place at 303 strokes, 19 over par.
Hutchison was the only Aggie to finish under par for the day. He overcame a bogey 5 on the first hole by draining four birdies across six holes to close out the front nine with a 3-under 32. Seniors Tanner Hughes and Jesse Bratz each carded 6-over 77s for a tie for 56th place. Freshman Daniel Kim shares 75th place with his 9-over 80, while junior transfer Jae Kim shot an 85 in his UC Davis debut.
Stanford's Brandon Wu leads the individual field at 6-under 65, with two nationally ranked Oklahoma State players – No. 3 Viktor Hovland and No. 97 Austin Eckroat – taking part in a four-way tie for second at 68. Hutchison, ranked 99th by Golfstat, sits among a five-man pack for sixth that includes OSU's Matthew Wolff, the country's consensus No. 1 player and last year's Phil Mickelson Award winner as the nation's top freshman.
The 19th installment of the Prestige continues with a second round on Tuesday. Golfweek's live coverage of the event – a new feature in 2019 – begins with the Day 2 action. Tune in by visiting Golfweek.com/ThePrestige.
