ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Senior Erinn Beattie tied her own indoor high jump school record from last year, winning the event to highlight the first day of the New Mexico Collegiate Classic. Her jump of 1.83m stands tied for fourth in the nation (NCAA/Athletic.net), behind Andrea Stapleton (BYU, 1.87), Zarriea Williis (Texas Tech, 1.85), and Falyn Reaugh (Oklahoma, 1.85).
Beattie cleared her opening height of 1.75m on the second attempt, which by itself would've been good enough for a fourth-place showing. However, a few attempts later, Beattie cleared 1.83m, tying her record-setting performance from the MPSF Indoor Championships in 2018. The jump was a mere centimeter lower than her personal best and outdoor school record height of 1.84m.
Erika Contreras competed in her first-ever weight throw event as one of only two UC Davis throwers at this meet, and the first since the 2017 season. Her best mark of 15.94m put her in eight place overall, and she just missed passing Veronica Smart's 2013 heave of 16.00 for sixth on the all-time performance list.
Haley Adel and Anya Sturm competed side-by-side in the 3,000m run, finishing mid-pack for 12th and 13th place, respectively. After redshirting the cross country season this past fall, freshman Sturm got to see action on the track, and was the third-placing freshman in her event, behind CSU Pueblo's Nicole Bouma (8th, 10:17.77) and Claire Pauley (11th, 10:33.89).
Freshman Kirsten Carter was the top-placing Aggie in the 200m, crossing the line 11th, with a time of 24.28 in her debut event, narrowly missing the indoor 200m record of 24.14 set in 2015 by Ashley Marshall.
Tomorrow's action starts with the field events at 10 AM MST, and the running events at 10:15 AM MST.
