Goulak/Thamma defend Kramer Classic title

ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. — Closing out a successful weekend of tennis, No. 43 Ivan Thamma and David Goulak defended their Kramer Classic doubles title, while UC Davis was represented well at the Pacific Invitational with players in both singles and doubles finals.

In the second consecutive year that UC Davis has been invited to the Kramer Classic, Goulak and Thamma claimed the doubles crown for back-to-back titles in Rolling Hills Estates. The No. 1 seeds in the tournament, Thamma and Goulak defeated New Mexico's Jake Trondson and Raul Dobai 8-6 to uphold their seed.

80997Doubles success at Kramer Classic seems to run in the family, as David Goulak's sister, Annette Goulak, also claimed the doubles title in the women's draw. A. Goulak, partnering with Sasha Vagramov of UCLA, defeated their opponents Gitte Heynemans and Khim Iglupas of Arizona.

In Stockton, freshman Andrei Volgin continues to impress, upsetting yet another seed in the top singles draw to reach the final at the Pacific Invitational. Volgin defeated third-seeded Santiago Hinojosa of Santa Clara 6-3, 6-1 to advance, hoping to meet teammate Arjith Jayaraman in the final.

Jayaraman battled against second seed Nitzan Ricklis (San Francisco), taking the first set 6-2, before falling 5-7, 2-6. Volgin was next to face Ricklis, but also fell in three sets. Ricklis has been an impact player for the Dons, posting a 10-5 record at the Nos. 2 and 3 spots in the singles lineup.

In doubles, the duo of Jayaraman and Volgin reached the final, but fell to Ricklis and partner Paul Giraud (USF), 8-5. Jayaraman and Volgin are 6-1 together this season, while Volgin leads the team with 11 doubles wins.

The Aggies will conclude the fall portion of the season with their last tournament at the Pacific Northwest Invitational, hosted by Washington next weekend, Nov. 8-10.
