UC Davis ends the fall with a sixth-place finish in Wisconsin

Westberg fires a collegiate-best final round of 70 to finish tied for 17th

ERIN, Wisc. — UC Davis freshman Jacob Westberg shot a collegiate-best final-round 70 to finish 2-under for the day and even par for the tournament, leading the Aggies to a sixth-place finish as a team to close out the fall season at the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills on Tuesday afternoon in Wisconsin.

Firing a final round 291 to finish 3-over par for the day, UC Davis dropped two spots into sixth, ending the tournament three shots ahead of Liberty and five shots back of fifth-place Indiana. Purdue, which led the tournament after 36 holes, finished 12-under for the day to edge Big Ten rival Northwestern by two shots.

South Florida's Luke Gifford and Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn tied for the individual championship at 7-under, with Gifford shooting a final round 69 to catch first-round leader Eichhorn, who shot an even-par 72 on Tuesday.

Westberg finished his front nine at 2-under following birdies on the second, third, and seventh, holes to offset a bogey on the par-four fourth. He then opened his back nine with a birdie on 11, and back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes to move to 4-under on the day before a double bogey on 18 gave two strokes back.

The Sacramento, Calif., native finished with a collegiate-best 216 and also posted his best finish of the season — a tie for 17th — for his first career top-25.

Freshman Mark Stephens finished strong to also post his first career top-25 finish, tearing up the back nine to the tune of birdies on four of the final seven holes to end the day at 3-under after the turn and erase a front-nine 37. Stephens, who shot a 1-under 71 during Monday's second round, finished the tournament with a 1-over 217 to end the event tied for 17th.

Just 24 hours after wrapping up a season-best round of 67, junior Thomas Hutchison struggled to the finish on Tuesday, ending the tournament in a tie for 19th with a 2-over 218 after opening the day in fourth place. Freshman Lucas Carper shot a 74 to end the tournament with a 6-over 222 and a tie for 35th, while sophomore Shane Muldowney closed out his fall with a final round 77 and ended in a tie for 68th.

In his first tournament of the season, sophomore Natheethorn Teacharuangchit shot a career-low 68 in Tuesday's final round competing as an individual, besting his previous collegiate low of 72 set five different times last season. The native of Bangkok, Thailand, finished 1-under on the front nine thanks to birdies on the second and sixth holes, before posting birdies on four of his final seven holes to finish at 4-under for the day and with a 4-over 220 for the tournament, good for a tie for 26th — a jump of 20 spots in the final standings and a career-best finish.

UC Davis' next scheduled tournament won't be until the end of January 2020, as the Aggies travel to Southern California to compete in the 43rd annual Southwestern Invitational hosted by Pepperdine on Jan. 27-28.
