Aggies charge into fourth at Marquette

Hutchison ties for day's low round, stands fourth after two days

ERIN, Wisc. — What a difference a day makes.

It was moving day for the UC Davis men's golf team on day two of the Marquette Intercollegiate at Erin Hills on Monday, as the Aggies shot a 6-under 282 as a team and moved into a tie for fourth alongside Northwestern after 36 holes.

UC Davis finished 18 shots better than it did during Sunday's opening round, briefly leading the tournament at one point on Monday afternoon before settling into the fourth-place position. The Aggies were one of five schools to shoot under par for the day and stand just three shots back of Purdue, which finished 10-under on the day to leap from a tie for ninth after 18 holes to first place following two rounds.

The team's 282 team score was the third-lowest on the day as UC Davis leads the tournament in par-3 scoring and is second in par-5 scoring. Only the Boilermakers and Indiana (-7, 281) had better days than the Aggies.

Monday's charge was led by junior Thomas Hutchison, who shot a 5-under 67 to improve 15 spots in the standings after ending day one in a tie for 19th. Hutchison's day was highlighted by a pair of eagles on the par-5 14th and the par-5 seventh, also draining three of his four birdies en route to a 4-under 32 on the back nine.

The San Jose, Calif., native's second-round 67 was tied for the day's low round, matching Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn, who leads the tournament by one shot with a 7-under 137 after 36 holes.

Freshman Jacob Western jumped two spots into a tie for 17th after firing an even-par 72 on Monday, finishing with two birdies on the back nine and rebounding to birdie two of his next three holes following a double bogey on the par-4 17th.

Fellow newcomer Mark Stephens also made a move on Monday, jumping six spots into a tie for 27th following a 1-under 71 and stands at 3-over for the tournament. The Redding, Calif., native was 1-under on the back nine thanks to birdies on the 14th and 16th holes, and added birdies on No. 2 and No. 3 after the turn.

Freshman Lucas Carper opened his day on fire, finishing 3-under on the back nine and adding a birdie on the second hole before giving shots back to finish at even par for the day and at 4-over for the tournament, good for a tie for 31st.

Sophomore Natheethorn Teacharuangchit was eight shots better than his opening round, finishing 2-under on the back nine to highlight his round and jumping him 11 spots into a tie for 46th thanks to an even-par 72 on Monday. Classmate Shane Muldowney was five shots better in his second round, ending the day in a tie for 68th.

Play concludes with the final round on Tuesday (Oct. 8) at 6:30 a.m. PT. Live scoring is available via Golfstat at http://results.golfstat.com/public/leaderboards/gsnav.cfm?pg=team&tid=19849.
