Hutchison wins Windon title, ties tournament record

Aggie sophomore finished 11-under-par, best by an Aggie since 2013

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- UC Davis sophomore Thomas Hutchison carded a 4-under-par 68 in the final round of the Windon Memorial Classic men's collegiate golf tournament, capturing individual medalist honors and tying the tournament record for best 54-hole score of 205 strokes.

As a team, the Aggies finished eighth among the 16-team field. Marquette won the team title, storming from fourth place to the top of the leaderboard with a final total of 4-under 860. Michigan State (862) and Iowa State (868) placed second and third, respectively.

Hutchison, a mathematics major from San Jose, California, drained three birdies on the front nine, then another three on the back en route to his 68. The 205-stroke total matches two previous performances at the Windon: Tulsa's Colton Staggs in 2014 and Michigan's Matt Thompson in 2011. This is the 22nd installment of the annual tourney, named for former Ameritech vice president Bernie Windon.

Hutchison's win is the first individual medalist honor since Ryan Han captured the Big West Conference championship last spring. Furthermore, it represents the first individual title in a regular-season tournament since Ben Corfee captured the El Macero Classic in 2017. The 11-under 205 total is also the best to par by an Aggie since Tyler Raber and Jonny Baxter shot 13-under and 12-under, respectively, at the SCVB Pacific Invitational in 2013. Hutchison opened the tournament with a career-best 64 on Sunday, tied for third both in program history and in Windon Memorial annals.

Among the remainder of the Aggie roster, senior Ryan Han turned in a 2-over 74 on the final day to finish at 3-over 219 overall, good for a share of 24th place. Senior Jesse Bratz added a 4-over 76 for 222 total, tied for 41st. Freshman Daniel Kim rounded out the UC Davis scorers in t69th place with a 230 total, helped by a weekend-best 74 on Monday.

Sophomore Andrew Arnheiter finished his first 2018-19 tournament, placing t66th as an individual entrant (229). Junior Matt Robinson improved to a 4-over 76 on Monday, totaling 235 strokes for 83rd place.

UC Davis continues action this Sunday through Tuesday at the Marquette Intercollegiate. That tournament takes place at Erin Hills Gof Course, the site of the 2017 U.S. Open.
