Hutchison fires 64 to lead Windon Memorial

Aggie sophomore ties No. 3 score in tourney history

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Sophomore Thomas Hutchison shot a career-best round of 64 to lead off UC Davis' Sunday action at the Windon Memorial Classic men's collegiate golf tournament, held at the Knollwood Club. He finished the day with a 36-hole total of 137, leaving him atop the 92-man individual leaderboard heading into Monday's final round.

As a team, UC Davis totaled rounds of 294 and 290 to stay in an eighth-place tie with South Florida.

Hutchison's 8-under-par opening round eclipsed his previous best of 65, set at the Amer Ari Intercollegiate last February.  It is tied for the third-best round in tournament history, matching Ohio State's Bo Hoag (2010) and Illinois' Chris DeForest (2008).

Additionally, Hutchison's 64 also marks the lowest by an Aggie since Matt Hansen carded the same at the 2011 NCAA Regional. The best UC Davis single round, per Golfstat's records dating back to the 1997-98 season, is a 63. Austin Graham hit that mark in the second round of The Prestige at PGA West on October 13, 2008, then Tyler Raber matched it a little more than a year later at the Stockton Sports Commission Pacific Invitational.

A UC Davis mathematics major and the 2017-18 Big West Conference Freshman of the Year, Hutchison birdied five holes on each of the front and back nines, including four straight from holes 3 through 6. He followed with a 73 in his second Sunday round, keeping him a stroke ahead of Northwestern's Ryan Lumsden, Marquette's Oliver Farrell and Michigan State's Andrew Walker for the individual championship.

Senior Ryan Han shot a 76 in the first round then recovered to fire a 3-under 69 in the second to finish his day in a tie for 22nd place at 145 total strokes. Fellow fifth-year senior Jesse Bratz had similar first-day scores of 76 and 70 to total 146, good for a share of 27th place. Freshman Daniel Kim rounded out the Aggie scorers with matching 6-over-par 78s, leaving him in T79th place individually.

Sophomore Andrew Arnheiter made his 2018-19 debut as an individual entrant, carding 75 and 77 during the two rounds. Junior Matt Robinson shot an 80 and 79 on Sunday. They rank T63rd and T87th, respectively, on the individual leaderboard.

Michigan State shot under par in both Sunday rounds, turning in team scores of 281 and 286 for 567 total strokes. That gives the Spartans a comfortable lead in front of UCLA (574), Northern Illinois (575) and Marquette (576) in the 16-team race.

The Windon Memorial, hosted by Northwestern, concludes with a single 18-hole round on Monday. UC Davis is grouped with Iowa State and South Florida, and will tee off from the first hole starting at 8 a.m. CST.
