UC Davis splits first day at Wildcat Classic

Aggies post highest attack average since August home tourney

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Senior outside hitter Emily Allen pounded out 20 kills while senior middle blocker Lauren Jackson hit .700, leading UC Davis to a four-set, 25-17, 25-22, 22-25, 25-16 win over UT Martin in Friday's nightcap match of Arizona's Wildcat Classic women's volleyball tournament at the McKale Center. The Aggies previously lost a five-set battle to New Mexico State by scores of 26-24, 10-25, 25-16, 17-25, 15-8 in their early-afternoon match.

UC Davis moves to 8-3 for the year. NMSU improved to 9-2 with that win. UT Martin heads to Saturday's action with a 6-5 record.

Allen's total of 20 kills and 14 digs against the Skyhawks marks her seventh double-double of the year. She led four Aggies with double-figure digs, along with setter Maddie Merlino (13), junior defensive specialist Ally Reyes (13) and senior outside hitter Brianna Karsseboom (10). Jackson also contributed on four of UC Davis' 10 team blocks in the win over UT Martin.

In the opener against NMSU, UC Davis sophomore Leonie Strehl knocked a team-best and career-high 11 kills on 25 swings, while fellow second-year Alexa Rockas hit 5-for-10 with a match-high six blocks. The Aggies recorded 13 team stuffs, with four coming in their dominating second-set victory.

UC Davis wraps up action at the Wildcat Classic against host Arizona at noon on Saturday. The Wildcats were among the 16 teams receiving votes toward Monday's AVCA Top 25 poll.

UC DAVIS-NEW MEXICO STATE NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS

• Strehl's previous high for kills was her eight one week prior against Boise State... She hit 3-for-4 without an error in the second, while teammate Lauren Matias was 4-for-6... UC Davis managed 13 kills with just one attacking error in that 25-10 win, hitting .545 with a 91 percent success rate at converting side outs (10-for-11).

• UC Davis came back from an early 12-6 deficit to a 13-13 tie in the first, then even held a 24-23 set point before NMSU finished the frame with three straight... The NMSU Aggies hit .357 (17-2-42) in that win, and scooped up 22 digs to hold the UC Davis Aggies' offense in check.

• The 25-10 win in the second set is the team's widest set victory since clipping Holy Cross, 25-9, in the opener of its August 25 sweep.

• Bolko's 21 digs marked her sixth match of the year with 20 or more.

UC DAVIS-UT MARTIN NOTES & HIGHLIGHTS

• The Aggies hit .250 for the match, scoring 54 kills with just 22 errors for the highest match hitting average since hitting .354 or higher in three straight matches to start the year... UC Davis compiled averages of .345 (15-5-29) and .522 (14-2-23) in the first and fourth frames, respectively.

• Allen's 20 kills marks her third such match of the 2018 season... She hit 7-0-10 (.700) in the final set, helping the Aggies convert 15 of 16 side-out opportunities (93.8 percent)... Allen had two kills and an ace during an 8-1 run that broke up an early 5-5 tie in that fourth set.

• UT Martin's third set win featured 17 ties and seven lead changes, with UC Davis holding an 18-17 edge after back-to-back blocks from freshman Josie Ough. 

• Reyes wore the libero jersey for Friday's nightcap, tying her career high of 13 digs... She first set that personal best 10 days earlier in the four-set win at Sacramento State.
