DAVIS, Calif.— UC Davis is set to kick off the 2018 regular season hosting Temple on Friday (Aug. 24) at 12:30 p.m. and Providence on Sunday (Aug. 26) at 11:00 a.m. for the first time in program history at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility. The Aggies will then make their way to Underhill Field in Berkeley, Calif. on Monday (Aug. 27) for a neutral-site matchup at 11:00 a.m. against 2017 NCAA Tournament finalist and No. 4 ranked team in the nation according to the Penn Monto/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division 1 Preseason Poll, Maryland.Â
LET THE GAMES BEGIN
UC Davis will face three teams this season, including Maryland, that earned a top-25 ranking in the NFHCA Preseason Poll. Fellow America East colleague Stanford will begin its season ranked tied for No. 15, while the league's East Division member, Maine, rounds out the list at No. 25.Â
AGGIES LOOK TO SETTLE SCORE WITH OWLS
UC Davis will look for a bit of redemption in its season opener against the Owls this Friday (Aug. 24) after falling in an overtime heartbreaker, 2-3, on the road last season (Oct. 8). Returning redshirt senior
Nica Taglieri put UC Davis on the board early, 1-0, within the first 10 minutes of play, while rising junior goalkeeper,
Chelsea Bigelow, notched six saves against the Owls—two of which came in overtime. Â
"Our goals are simply to compete in each moment and put ourselves in a position to score," said head coach
Britt Broady, who enters her second season at the helm for UC Davis in 2018.Â
"We had a great match up with Temple last year, but they were able to finish when we could not," said Broady. "They play a fast-paced, dynamic game of hockey and that's how we are pushing the tempo as well. It's going to be a battle and I think this team is excited to show how we've grown and developed in the past year," Broady added.Â
2018 ROSTER AT A GLANCE
With nine incoming freshman, seven returning starters, and a three-member senior class, the Aggies skew young this year as they begin the 2018 season with 17 underclassmen on their roster of 24. Â
The Aggies will also welcome back redshirt sophomore,
Sara Janetzky, who suffered a season-ending injury in 2017. An America East All-Rookie Team selection as a freshman, Janetzky was one of five Aggies to start in all 18 games on the schedule.
"We are young, but we have more depth than we've had in the past," said Broady. "
Stephanie Hussey, who is entering her third season as an assistant coach for the Aggies, has been working tirelessly with our forward line to create movement, quick shots, and scrappiness."Â
"Newcomers
Siena Dwyer,
Brooke Sanchez, and
Shannon Wong add a quickness and fearlessness that is hard to defend, while in the midfield, we have players who have been working to develop the attack and build the play," Broady said. "
Madison Theodore,
Eline van den Bosch,
Nicola Prebble, and
Milou Korthouwer will not only transition the ball to the attacking third, they will also sustain a team attack," Broady added.Â
"Defensively, we have experience with senior back
Kelley Kramer and junior goalkeeper
Chelsea Bigelow, in addition to newcomers
Audrey Matthew and
Isabella Porco, who are playing as veterans and will make entering the circle a challenge."
The Aggies are set to open play at the Aggie Field Hockey Facility on Friday (Aug. 24) against Temple at 12:30 p.m., before facing Providence on Sunday (Aug. 26) at 11:00 a.m.Â
