Aggies on the rise at Big West championship

April 30, 2018

CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. - Junior Ryan Han fired a 5-under-par 67 while juniors Tanner Hughes and Jesse Bratz also enjoyed under-par rounds, helping UC Davis ascend the team rankings into third place after the second day of the Big West Conference men's golf championship at Industry Hills Golf Club Monday.

The Aggies assembled a team score of 580 in the second round, the best of the day by five strokes and enough to leapfrog three places to within four of Cal State Fullerton and UC Irvine. The Titans and Anteaters enter Tuesday's final round with matching 569 totals, while UC Davis sits along at 3-under 573 toward the team championship.

Individually, Han birded 17 then eagled the home hole to shoot 3-under on the back nine en route to the day's best 18-hole score. The aerospace engineering major from Hollister also drained birdies on 3, 6, 10 and 11 on Monday. The 67 total, his career best as an Aggie, vaulted him 16 places up the leaderboard into a tie for third place with UC Irvine's Jonathan Kang.

Han enters the final round with a 140 total, just a single stroke behind leaders Martin Manolo (Cal State Fullerton) and Brandon Bauman (UCSB) at 5-under 139.

Both Bratz and Hughes rode strong starts to their respective Monday rounds. Bratz, who led UC Davis with his 71 on Monday, birdied each of the first four holes of his second round toward his 2-under 70. He holds fifth place outright with 141 strokes, two off the leaders. Hughes drained an eagle 3 on the first hole, then birdied the next two par-4 holes, ultimately turning in a 2-under 70 and putting in a tie for sixth place at 141.

Freshman Thomas Hutchison carded a 1-over 73 to finish the day with 150 strokes, leaving him in a tie for 33rd place. Senior Brandon Baumgarten completed the UC Davis scorecard with a 77 on Monday.

UC Davis has UC Santa Barbara close behind in fourth place at 2-under 574. UCI moved into a tie atop the team standings thanks to a 3-under 285 on Monday.

The Big West Conference championship, held at Industry Hills' 6,989-yard Eisenhower Course, concludes with a final 18-hole round on Tuesday. UC Davis entered the tournament as the top seed.
