March 29, 2018

SAN FRANCISCO - Senior Brandon Baumgarten fired a 2-under-par 69 while freshman Thomas Hutchison finished a stroke back with a 70 round to lead UC Davis on the first day of The Goodwin men's collegiate golf tournament, hosted by Stanford at TPC Harding Park Thursday.

Baumgarten's team-leading score put him in a five-man tie for 10th place that includes No. 6 Brad Dalke of Oklahoma, while Hutchison took part in a sizable tie for 16th. As a team, the Aggies shared 17th place with San Francisco through 18 holes of play. Baumgarten shot 1-under on each of the front and back nine en route to his 69 for the day, with back-to-back birdies on the 13th and 14th holes. Hutchison fell to 2-under after the first five holes, but rallied for birdies on the eighth, ninth, 11th and 15th. Junior Ryan Han shot a 4-over 75 on Thursday, junior Tanner Hughes carded a 77, and senior Evan Knight turned in a 79 to round out the UC Davis contingent. Host Stanford leads a tight team race with a 7-under-par 277 total, one stroke ahead of Northwestern and two ahead of Oklahoma and Oregon. Senior Jeffrey Swegle leads the medalist race with an 8-under 68. This is the 49th running of Stanford's premier home tournament, formerly named the United States Intercollegiate. The 26-team, 135-player Goodwin continues with 18-hole rounds on each of Friday and Saturday. UPDATE: UC Davis will tee off from the 10th beginning at 12:25 p.m. on Friday. 2018 GOODWIN
