High-scoring Bertsch earns fifth Big West honor

Records fell as senior helps Aggies to unbeaten week

DAVIS, Calif. — When it rains it pours, and the buckets were full of points this past weekend for senior biomedical engineering major Morgan Bertsch, who capped off a net-torching weekend with her fifth career Big West Conference Player of the Week honor, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.

The Santa Rosa, Calif., native, who picked up her second award this season following her Nov. 19 citation from the conference, scored 68 points in only 47 total minutes in the Aggies' two wins this past weekend as UC Davis dispatched Sacramento State, 109-60, on the road and grounded SeattleU, 76-59, to wrap-up an unbeaten weekend.

Bertsch erupted for a school single-game record 40 points in the win over the Hornets, eclipsing Aimee Conner's mark of 36 points set against Chico State in 1993, becoming only the second UC Davis basketball player to score 40 points in a game along with Corey Hawkins of the men's team, who did so against Hawai'i in 2013.

The senior tied the school's single-game record (and set a new school Division I benchmark) with 16 field goals made against Sacramento State, matching Conner's record established against Cal Poly in 1993, while tying her own school single-game record with 28 attempts. All of that accomplished in just 22 minutes against the Hornets, adding nine rebounds, an assist, and two blocks.

Two days later, Bertsch continued to pour it on, finishing with 28 points in 25 minutes against the Redhawks in helping UC Davis to a 17-point victory, adding five rebounds, three steals, and two more blocks. She hit 9-of-15 from the floor and 9-of-10 from the line en route to her sixth game of 20 points or more this season.

Having already scored more points than any basketball player (men or women) in Aggie history, Bertsch enters the week having scored the most points of any player in Division I women's basketball this season with 244, while also ranking third in the NCAA in points per game (24.4), free throws made (61), and field goals made (88), fifth in free throw attempts (74), and seven in field goal attempts (180).

UC Davis plays away from the friendly confines of The Pavilion for the eighth time in 11 contests this weekend, making the short jaunt to "The Hilltop" to take on San Francisco on Saturday (Dec. 15) at 3 p.m. The Aggies then return home for their final game before the holiday break, hosting Saint Mary's on Monday (Dec. 17) at 6 p.m.
