SACRAMENTO, Calif. — At the 2018 NCAA West Regional at the Haggin Oaks Golf Complex in Sacramento, Calif., UC Davis women's cross country finished in 19th place, while senior Jordy Ceja crossed in 67th.
With Causeway Cup standings on the line, the Aggie women were one spot behind Sacramento State after the first split of the women's 6K race, but took the lead for good at the second split to finish in 19th place overall out of 36 teams. Sacramento State finished one place behind, in 20th, to award the women's team the five Causeway points. Since only four Aggie men raced, UC Davis conceded the five points to Sacramento State, resulting in an even split on the day,
Individually, junior Sarah Anderson was the first UC Davis runner to cross, with a personal record of 21:15.2 at the Haggin Oaks course, which was good for 70th place. Also earning personal course records were fellow juniors Julia Lemak (80th, 21:23.7) and Haley Adel (109th, 21:42.0). Lemak continued her racing strategy from the Doc Adams Invite, and paced well throughout the race, moving up 49 places — from 129th at the first split — to finish 80th overall. Rounding out the scoring five was junior Mandy Wainfan (22:16.1), in 149th place, and freshman Marin Chamberlin (22:22.2) in 157th place. Freshman Anaya Ward (160th, 22:25.1) and junior Lara Vetter (179th, 22:33.7) made up the seven Aggie women, with Ward just missing a new personal record by one second.
"For the women, I think the team place exactly reflected our ability today," said head coach Emma Petersen. "We ran without our number one, Eva Goodisson, due to injury and that was always going to make the team score weaker, but I thought the ladies stepped up really well to still finish top 20 today. Sarah [Anderson], Haley [Adel] and Mandy [Wainfan] have been in our top five all season, and today they were joined by Julia [Lemak] who clearly took a lot of confidence from her win last week, and was able to come right through the field in the last ten minutes of the race. We also got some Causeway Cup points, so that's a positive!"
Racing in the men's 10K were two seniors, Ceja and Bradley Needles, sophomore Ryman Crone, and freshman Michael Wheeler. Ceja capped off an outstanding senior season with a 67th place finish, and a time of 30:52.8. Although he finished in 67th, Ceja was the fourth Big West Conference runner to finish, bettering his Big West Championships placing by two spots. Crone, racing in just the second 10K of his career so far, finished in 140th, and was the 24th Big West finisher, with a time of 32:30.1. In their first 10K races, Wheeler (171st; 33:11.4) gained experience in the tough competition, while Needles (180, 33:26.2) closed his senior season as an Aggie.
"Jordy [Ceja] was in contention throughout the race and in an incredibly deep field he moved through well and finished strong. Our other men racing all gained such valuable experience in a 10K," said Petersen. "I think for both teams it's important to reflect on the progress we've made this season in training and racing. Miracles don't happen overnight but we've been laying such a strong foundation this season that I'm confident we'll have very different outcomes at this meet in the next few years."
