DAVIS, Calif. – It is a unique week for UC Davis football, for numerous reasons.
Even though every game is important, there is an extra level of energy and excitement when rivalry week arrives, and that is the case with regards to Saturday's 12 p.m. Causeway Classic at Aggie Stadium.
UC Davis is not only focused on bringing the Causeway trophy back to Davis, its home in three of the last four years, but playing its best football when faced with a unique opportunity.
This week's mission is simple: Win and earn bragging rights against cross-Causeway rival Sacramento State, the program's first Big Sky championship (and league title since the 2009 season) and generate momentum heading into the postseason with an opportunity to host the first FCS playoff game in Aggie Stadium's history.
Joining the team as its honorary captain for this year's rivalry matchup is Kameron Fox, a UC Davis Children's Hospital Team Champion. After battling Hodgkin's lymphoma, Kameron received news that he was cancer free after 10 rounds of chemotherapy.
He and his family — parents Kevin and Maria, and younger brother, Josh — will attend Thursday's practice to meet the football team, attend this year's Causeway Luncheon, and take the field for Saturday's Classic. Afterwards, the program will host Kameron and his family as its honorary guest.
Saturday's game is a unique situation for 16 seniors since this is their last regular season appearance at Aggie Stadium. Fans are encouraged to arrive early to honor this group of outstanding student-athletes, and their loved ones, in a pregame ceremony. This group of seniors includes
Anthony Baumgart,
Daliceo Calloway,
Terrell Cloud,
Keelan Doss,
Ethan Hicks,
Ramsey Hufford,
Alex Long,
Will Martin,
Ryan Martinez,
Namane Modise,
Mason Moe,
Hunter O'Brion,
Isiah Olave,
Ryan Parenteau,
C.J. Spencer and
Vincent White.
Due to the Camp Fire, UC Davis Athletics is monitoring air quality for the safety and health of its student-athletes, and everyone involved with Saturday's game, and will do so throughout the week. As of the time of this release, kickoff will take place at 12 p.m.
UCDavisAggies.com and
football's Twitter account will provide the latest information regarding this year's Causeway Classic.
For the second time this season — the Aggies' Big Sky opener vs. Idaho was the first — Eleven Sports will provide a national broadcast of another UC Davis home football game. Bill Doleman (PBP) and Will Blackmon (Analyst) are on Eleven Sports' call; fans can find Eleven Sports on national cable/satellite systems such as DIRECTV (channel 623), AT&T U-verse (channel 1665), and Verizon Fios (channel 597). Eleven Sports is also available on various other cable and OTT providers such as Fubo.TV, Sony PlayStation Vue, Google Fiber 251, RCN 571, Atlantic Broadband 501, and Hawaiian Telcom 1091 -- and is available in 55+ million homes.
Scott Marsh (PBP) and Doug Kelly (Analyst) will call Saturday's Causeway Classic on Sports 1140 KHTK, and
TuneIn's online stream.
In addition to Eleven Sports' broadcast, a video stream is available on Pluto TV (channel 245) and
WatchBigSky.com.
QUICK HITS
• The 2018 season is the 100th in UC Davis football's history
• UC Davis Children's Hospital Team Champion — a child who has faced adversity and overcame challenges with a positive and outgoing spirit that lifted those around them — and honorary captain for Saturday's game is Kameron Fox
• Kameron battled Hodgkin's lymphoma and, in November of 2017 after 10 rounds of chemotherapy, he received news that he was cancer free
• Joining Kameron this weekend are his parents, Kevin and Maria, and younger brother Josh
• Saturday's game is the second of Eleven Sports' two visits to Aggie Stadium this season
• The first broadcast took place during the Aggies' Big Sky opener vs. Idaho
• Eleven Sports is available on DirecTV (channel 623), AT&T Uverse (channel 1665), Verizon FiOS (channel 597) and Google Fiber (Channel 251)
• UC Davis is one of three Big Sky teams with an opportunity to win a Big Sky title this weekend (Eastern Washington and Weber State are the other two)
• If any of those three teams win on Saturday, they will end the regular season as Big Sky champions, regardless of the outcome of the other games involving that group
• In addition to a conference crown, the league's automatic bid to the FCS Playoffs is also at stake
• If there's a three-way tie, Weber State will earn the auto bid since Wildcats hold the tie breaker over the Eagles and the Aggies fell to Eastern Washington
• UC Davis and Weber are tied: Aggies earn the auto bid because the two teams did not play each other and the tiebreaker would be decided by Sagarin rankings
• UC Davis and Eastern Washington are tied: EWU gets it due to head-to-head
• EWU and WSU are tied: Weber State earns the automatic bid due to its head-to-head result
• If there is a four-way tie at 6-2 between Idaho State, Eastern Washington, UC Davis and Weber State, EWU earns the automatic qualifier
SERIES HISTORY
• Saturday's game is the 66th meeting between UC Davis and Sacramento State, and the 65th Causeway Classic in program history
• These teams squared off twice during the 1988 season — the only time the local rivals met in the postseason, in addition to their regular season matchup
• UC Davis leads the all-time series 45-20
• The Aggies won six of the last eight Causeway games and three of the last four in Davis
• Last year's loss was a rare result suffered in recent seasons since UC Davis won 20 of the last 26 head-to-head contests
AGGIE EVO
