SUNNYVALE, Calif. — A fast-paced Bronco Invite course resulted in season-best times for the entire men's team, as well as several personal best times, and the women placed tenth overall out of 24 teams.
Senior Jordy Ceja was again the leader for the UC Davis men, placing 34th (24:29.1) out of 176 runners from 20 teams in the men's 8K invitational race. Senior Bradley Needles shaved 50 seconds off his best 8K time for the Aggies to finish as the second scorer for UC Davis (78th, 25:04.2), contributing to a 16th place team finish.
Although "the men raced again without a few key scorers," according to head coach Emma Petersen, "we had several personal bests, including Brad coming through and stepping up big to be our number two today."
Junior Ryman Crone (104th) hit a personal best time of 25:19.9 to finish third for UC Davis, and freshmen Michael Wheeler and Derek Lin crossed the line in under 26 minutes to round out the scoring five.
In the women's 6K invitational, junior Sarah Anderson (23rd, 20:59.2) was the first UC Davis women's finisher for the second time this season, and was within five seconds of a top-20 finish. Freshman Eva Goodisson, and juniors Haley Adel, Mandy Wainfan, and Julia Lemak made up the top five runners for the Aggies, leading to a tenth place overall team finish in a field where several teams received votes for national rankings.
"It was a tough day for our team with sickness leaving the women's team depleted and you just can't get away with that in a field of this quality. It was nice to see Sarah getting back to her best and she [will] build on this performance for the remainder of the season," said Petersen.
With her 21:35.8 time, Adel matched her season best from the Bill Dellinger Invite (Sept. 21). Tatjana Kunz, Lara Vetter, Anaya Ward, and Marie Navarro all finished with personal best times, with Vetter and Ward cutting almost a minute off their previous best times.
Petersen said, "we'll take the next few weeks to rest up and recover so we can be back to full strength for our conference championships. Much like the women, the men should be back healthy and ready to go in a few weeks." The next race for the UC Davis cross country teams will be the Big West Conference Championships, held Oct. 27, in Brea, Calif., the site of the Mark Covert Classic earlier this season.
