ERIN, Wisc. -- UC Davis sophomore Thomas Hutchison fired a 1-under-par 71 to move into a tie for second place after the second round of the Marquette Intercollegiate men's collegiate golf tournament, held at the par-72, 7,869-yard Erin Hills Golf Course Monday.
As a team, the Aggies enter the final round in fifth place with a 595-stroke total, just one behind Ole Miss and four behind third-place host Marquette. Arizona State (578) and Northwestern (582) finished Monday's action in a tight 1-2 finish for the team title.
Hutchison birdied the seventh and eighth holes down the final stretch to ascend the individual standings and move into striking range of the leader, Arizona State's Alex del Rey. Hutchison has a 36-hole total of 141, two off del Rey. Senior Tanner Hughes carded a 3-over 75 to move into the top 25, settling at 15th place. He overcame a rocky first nine holes of the day to birdie 2 and 4 on the front nine. (UC Davis began the day on 10.)
Freshman Daniel Kim followed his Sunday 71 with an 82 on Monday to slip into a tie for 41st at 153. Senior Ryan Han rounded out the Aggie scorers with 156 strokes, turning in a 5-over 77 in the second round. Sophomore Andrew Arnheiter finished sixth places ahead of Han in t51st place as an individual entrant, while senior Jesse Bratz scored an 80 on Monday to share 63rd place.
Hutchison, a UC Davis mathematics major and last year's Big West Conference Freshman of the Year, shares second place with Northwestern's Ryan Lumsden. Ole Miss individual Josh Seiple sits alone in fourth place at 142, while Marquette's Hunter Eichhorn moved up to fifth place at 143. Hutchison looks to be come the first Aggie to win two tournaments in a season since Austin Graham in 2009.
The Marquette Intercollegiate features 11 teams, although Iowa was disqualified from the race due to being reduced to just three individuals. The tournament concludes with an 18-hole final round on Tuesday.
