May 3, 2017 SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - Junior Brandon Baumgarten fired a 3-under-par 69 while seniors Ben Corfee and Nicolas Noya shot rounds of 71 to finish in the top 10, helping UC Davis move up to a fifth-place finish at the Big West Conference men's golf championship, hosted by UC Santa Barbara at Sandpiper Golf Club Wednesday.
Baumgarten birdied three par-5 holes, including both on the front nine, to post the best round by an Aggie for the three-day tournament. Corfee, who led his team throughout the championship, overcame an early stumble by shooting back-to-back birdies on 6 and 7 followed by 11 consecutive pars. He finished his tourney with a three-round total of 213, good for a tie for fifth place in the final individual standings. Noya, making just his fifth lineup start of the year, shot 1-under for the front nine and even par for the back for a 71, propelling him eight spots to a tie for eighth on the individual leaderboard at 215 strokes. Matt Robinson turned in a 75 on Wednesday. Overall, the Aggies shot a 3-under-par 285 in the third round, six strokes better than their Tuesday effort and strong enough to vault them over UC Irvine and Cal State Fullerton for fifth in the team standings. CSUN's Felix Mory won individual medalist with his 10-under 206 total, four strokes ahead of Long Beach State's Joe Fryer. UC Santa Barbara held on for its first team title since 1988, following up its torrid 279 on Tuesday with a 291 on Wednesday toward a 852 total. CSUN shot a 284 for the third round â€" the only one lower than UC Davis' 285 â€" to move within a stroke of the Gauchos. Cal Poly finished third with a 855 total. The NCAA will announce its selections for the six region championships on Thursday, May 4. A total of 81 teams plus 45 at-large individuals will compete at one of the six sites: College Grove, Tennessee; West Lafayette, Indiana; Stanford, California; Austin, Texas; Baton Rouge, Louisiana; and Sammamish, Washington.
