May 25, 2017 AUSTIN, Texas - UC Davis senior Rianna Goins finished second in her first-round heat and sixth overall in the women's 800-meter run with a time of two minutes, 7.63 seconds, earning a spot in Friday's quarterfinal round at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship West Preliminaries at Mike A. Myers Stadium Thursday.
The top three finishers in each heat plus the next six at large advanced from the first round to the quarterfinals. Goins was the only runner from a mid-major in the top 16; the next highest was North Dakota State's Amy Andrushko in 18th at 2:09.26. She finished second in her heat behind another Aggie, Texas A&M's Jazmine Fray, who crossed in 2:07.22. A native of Anaheim Hills and a two-time Big West Conference champion in the event, Goins entered the meet as the 14th seed in the region. She will race among the three quarterfinal races on Friday at 4:30 p.m. PDT. Twelve runners will advance from that round to the finals at Oregon in early June. Michaela Mundt posted a hammer throw of 57.13 meters, or 187-feet-5, in her second attempt. She finished 30th in the meet, eight places better than her seeding. Junior
Emma Redick ended her season with her appearance in the 400-meter hurdles. She placed 40th overall at 1:11.76. Senior
Alex Grigoriev was the only UC Davis male entered in a Friday event, but he did not finish in the men's 800. The West Prelims continue through Saturday. Five Aggie women will compete in events on Friday:
