BERKELEY, Calif. - Senior Hannah Kirkegaard ran a season-best 17 minutes, 14.63 seconds to place third in the women's 5,000-meter run, highlighting UC Davis action at the Brutus Hamilton Open collegiate track & field meet at Edwards Stadium Friday.

Kirkegaard was one of 11 Aggies competing in Friday's open and distance carnival portion of Cal's showcase meet. Her time represents a 17-second improve over her previous 2017 best, and ranks second in her collegiate history behind only her PR of 16:51.37, set early in 2015. On the men's side, sophomore Michael Pertusati broke the 180-foot barrier in the hammer throw for the third time this season, firing a fifth-place mark of 54.90 meters, or 180 feet, one inch. Several Aggies made their season or collegiate debuts in their respective events on Friday. Sophomore decathlete Drake Foote posted his first long jump mark of the year, placing third with a wind-assisted 6.69m (21-11.5). Freshman Zachary Katzman ran his first collegiate steeplechase (9:39.83), while former UC Davis club runner Jon Horvath made his first varsity appearance in the 5,000 (15:30.86). The majority of the UC Davis track & field teams will compete in Saturday's Invitational portion of the Brutus Hamilton meet, named for the legendary former Cal head coach.
