April 11, 2017 DAVIS, Calif. - A total of eight UC Davis men's water polo players captured Western Water Polo Association All-Academic honors for the 2016 season, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon. Alphabetically, the Aggie honorees are Marcus Anderson, Carlo Burney, Nick Coufal, Spencer Galli, Ido Goldschmidt, Yurii Hanley, Colter Knight and Riley Venne.
To be eligible for WWPA All-Academic honors, a player must have competed in at least 50 percent of his team's games during the current season, carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or better, be classified as a full-time student for all terms of attendance, and have completed a minimum of one semester or two quarters at his institution. This is the third such honor for Galli, a redshirt junior majoring in human development. Coufal and Venne each earned their second academic all-conference nod, while Anderson, Burney, Goldschmidt, Hanley and Knight each captured their first. The WWPA awards program supplements the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches All-Academic awards in February, for which UC Davis had a program-record 11 recipients. The Aggies went 23-7 in 2016, setting a school record for wins and winning percentage, while capturing their first WWPA title since 1997.
