DAVIS, Calif. - After strong outdoor-season kickoff meets at both the Chico Multi and the Cal Opener, UC Davis track & field returns to the Woody Wilson Track and Toomey Field for the Aggie Open, the first of three home meets this Friday and Saturday.

This weekend's field consists mostly of UC Davis and Sacramento State entrants, with strong representation from Nevada, Pacific and Cal State East Bay. Two-year programs like Sacramento City College, American River College and Merritt College also have their share of entries.

Friday's portion of the meet features the men's and women's hammer throw events out at the hammer ring (near Schaal Aquatics Center) with the men's and women's javelin taking place at the Woody Wilson Track. The remainder of the meet begins with the men's long jump and high jump at 9 a.m. on Saturday. The women's 5,000 begins the slate of running events at 9 a.m. For a full meet schedule, see below.

The Aggies covered three different locations during the first weekend of March. Senior Rianna Goins competed at the USATF Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., becoming the first Aggie during the program's Div. I era to compete on that stage as a collegian.

Heptathlete Erinn Beattie and decathlete Tommy Grossman represented UC Davis at the Chico Multi-Event Classic. Beattie finished second in the hep with 4,989 points, good for No. 2 in the school record book. Her 1.75-meter effort in the high jump during Day 1 came just shy of the school record of 1.76 that she shares with former teammate Katie Barber. Grossman placed fifth the dec in his collegiate debut as a multi athlete, amassing 6,280 points.

The majority of the Aggies took part in the Cal Opener at historic Edwards Stadium. Overall, UC Davis won all three relays it entered and had eight individual winners: Steven Childs (long jump), Jianni Giusti (high jump), Morgan Dutra (shot put), Breanna Standifer (discus throw), Drew Xandrine-Anderson (triple jump), Brian Thomas (800), Emma Redick (400 hurdles), Kierra Davis (200) and Antony Ardis (200).

Thomas made his collegiate debut in the 800 but his time of 1:53.30 put him atop a list of 14 Big West runners in the event during the first weekend. Jordon Rushing ranks first in the 1,500 (3:54.12), Beattie leads the league's high jumpers (1.75m/5-8.75) and Xandrine-Anderson paces the triple jumpers (15.39m/50-6).

Several Aggies also rated among the nation's top performers for the first weekend. Junior Ryan Hoffman's 48.51 was third in the meet but fourth among 41 Div. I runners nation-wide. Davis' 11.93 in the 100 puts her seventh. Both winning 4x400 relays rank fourth in the country. The team of Thomas, Ardis, Hoffman and Alex Grigoriev dominated the men's race at 3:15.33, while the women's foursome of Mikaela Adolphus, Rochelle Nadreau, Khadija Imara and Davis bested the field by more than two full seconds at 3:54.71.

UC Davis two more home meets in 2017. The fabled Woody Wilson Classic takes place on April 14-15, while Sacramento State comes to town for the annual Causeway Classic Dual on April 28.

Red Cap Timing will provide live Aggie Open results. Complete heat/flight sheets will be available for all athletes and spectators on Thursday, March 9.
