DAVIS, Calif. - A program-record 11 student-athletes plus the team as a whole were bestowed with All-Academic awards by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches for the 2016 season, it was announced Monday.
To earn ACWPC All-Academic recognition, a player must hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or higher. Honorees are awarded among three classifications: Outstanding (3.71-4.0), Superior (3.41-3.70) and Excellent (3.20-3.40). Unlike the Western Water Polo Association All-Academic team, there is no minimum of games played nor a restriction that prohibits freshmen from earning such honors.
Four Aggies appeared in the Superior category: redshirt junior
Carlo Burney, plus redshirt juniors
Nick Coufal,
Colter Knight and
Riley Venne. The other seven made the Excellent category: redshirt junior
Spencer Galli, sophomore
Ido Goldschmidt, redshirt freshman
Max Somple, and true freshmen
Joseph Gomez,
Yurii Hanley,
Kyle Reilly and
Jack Stafford. This is Galli's third straight ACWPC All-Academic nod. Burney, Coufal, Knight, Somple and Venne earn their second award.
Overall, UC Davis was one of 26 teams to hold a team GPA of 3.0 or better, compiling a 3.09 composite. Salem International had the highest GPA of 3.58, with MIT close behind at 3.57. The 11-man class surpassed the previous Aggie record of 10 All-Academic winners, set by the 2007 squad.
UC Davis finished 23-7 overall in 2016, winning the Western Water Polo Association and advancing to the NCAA postseason for the first time since 1997.
