Feb. 28, 2017 WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - Senior Ben Corfee enjoyed UC Davis' low third round, junior Evan Knight fired a 3-under-par 69 for the team's low second round, while freshman Matt Robinson closed action as the team's top individual finisher, highlighting Aggie action at the Southwestern Invitational, hosted by Pepperdine at North Ranch Country Club Lakes and Oaks courses. UC Davis finished Tuesday's final competition in a tie for eighth place, compiling a score of 19-over-par 883.
The Aggies were in 10th place at 301 after the first round, but rallied in the second round, which was halted by darkness until Tuesday morning. When play resumed, Knight's 69 led the team to a 288 total, moving UC Davis up two places into eighth. Like Knight, another junior,
Brandon Baumgarten, rallied from a tough first round to a 2-under 70 in the second. Corfee also contributed a 73 in Round 2, setting up his Tuesday session. Robinson, who shot a 3-under 69 to open the tourney, birdied four holes on the back nine to help erase an early stumble. He finished the tournament with a 2-over 74 in the final round, giving him a 54-hole total of 219. Robinson finished in 21st place outright. Corfee ended up two strokes back in a tie for 21st place, thanks to his even-par 72 on Tuesday. Baumgarten turned in a 1-over 73 on Tuesday to finish up at 6-over 222, good for a share of 28th place. Knight dipped a few places to t48th after his 76 in the final round, closing out in a tie for 48th. Junior
Ryan Han shot a 75 in the third round to move up eight places to t55th. Pepperdine's Sahith Theegala held off a late challenge from SMU's Alex Higgs for the individual medalist honor. The host Waves won the team championship at 21-under-par 843, some 16 strokes ahead of No. 6-ranked USC. UC Davis goes idle for almost a full month, returning to action after its final examinations on March 27-28 at Oregon's Duck Invitational.
