Feb. 27, 2017 WESTLAKE VILLAGE, Calif. - UC Davis freshman Matt Robinson carded a 3-under-par in the first round during Monday's action at the Southwestern Invitational men's collegiate golf tournament, hosted by Pepperdine at the North Ranch Country Club. The Aggies finished the opening round in a tie for 10th place with a 301, but were 1-under in the second round when play was halted due to darkness.
Robinson suffered a rocky start to his Monday with bogeys on the seventh and eighth, but enjoyed a clean sheet for the remaining 16 holes. He shot 1-under-par on the back nine thanks to a birdie 3 on the 16th, then birdied three of the remaining front nine to surge into the top five of the leaderboard. Senior
Ben Corfee ended the first round in a tie for 49th with a 4-over 76, while junior
Ryan Han was a stroke behind in a tie for 53rd place. Junior
Brandon Baumgarten shot a 79 to end Round 1 in 67th, with junior
Evan Knight in t77th with an 81. However, Baumgarten and Knight were each under par in their incomplete second rounds. Knight birdied four of his first seven holes to kick off his second set of 18, while Baumgarten had two birdies and an eagle 3 on the 12th to highlight Round 2. Pepperdine's Sahith Theegala led the individual first-round standings with a 6-under-par 66, one stroke up on teammate Clay Feagler and two ahead of Washington State's Nick Mandell. Robinson matched USC's Rico Hoey and Augusta's Broc Everett in a three-way tie for fourth, three strokes off Theegala's lead. The Waves also dominated the team leaderboard in Round 1, compiling a 13-under-par 275 total. The remainder of Round 2 and the entire third round of play will take place on Tuesday. The North Ranch CC Lakes and Oaks courses cover 6,992 yards and a par of 72.
