Feb. 20, 2017 LA QUINTA, Calif. - Freshman Matt Robinson shot a 1-under-par 70 to lead all UC Davis competitors in th first round of the 17th-annual Prestige at PGA WEST collegiate men's golf tournament at the Greg Norman Course Monday. Robinson finished the first of three rounds in a tie for 12th in the individual standings, while the Aggies sit in a tie for 10th among the 13-team field.
Robinson birdied the second, fifth and 12th holes en route to his team-best round of 70. Senior
Ben Corfee was even par for the front nine, then birdied the 10th to move to 1-under, but finished with a 39 on the back nine to finish the day in a tie for 41st place at 3-over 74. That matched him with junior teammate
Jeremy Sanchez, who settled down after a tough first six holes, then shot even par for the remaining 12 to finish with his 74. Junior
Evan Knight and senior
Nicolas Noya each carded 4-over 75 scores to round out the UC Davis team scoring. Both players birdied the 15th while Knight also beat the 566-yard 12th hole. They both joined juniors
Ryan Han and
Brandon Baumgarten, who were entered as individual competitors, as part of the 10-way tie for 52nd. Peppperdine and Stafnord share the team lead at 3-under-par 281, while San Diego State is a stroke behind in third at 282. UC Davis shares 10th place with fifth-ranked Texas Tech at 9-over 293. The Prestige at PGA WEST, hosted jointly by UC Davis and Stanford, continues through Wednesday.
