Sept. 4, 2016 Sophomore attacker Ido Goldschmidt totaled five goals, including a hat trick in Sunday's opening 18-6 win over George Washington, to lead UC Davis to a Day 2 sweep at the Bruno Classic men's collegiate water polo at Brown's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center.
The 10th-ranked Aggies, who finished the day with an 8-7 victory over No. 20 Saint Francis of Brooklyn, improve to 3-1 for the season. Sophomore utility
Sasa Antunovic scored two goals in each contest. Redshirt freshman
Holden Tamblyn, sophomore
Marcus Anderson and junior
Cory Laidig each added two in the morning win over GW, while senior team captain
Tennyson May netted two scores in the getaway game against the Terriers. UC Davis held a 3-1 lead early on against SFC after Antunovic converted a 6-on-5 opportunity with five minutes remaining in the second period. However, Ilija Djuretic converted a five-meter penalty shot then Boris Posavec fired in an equalizer to make it 3-3 at the break. Defender Jonas Veazey gave the Terriers a 4-3 lead with his goal midway through the third, but the Aggies responded with three unanswered: May's goal at 2:31,
Morgan Olson-Fabbro's power-play conversion with 0:57 left, then sophomore
Colter Knight's score to start the fourth. UC Davis and SFC traded goals the rest of the way to keep the Aggies in front. May and Antunovic each scored on a Aggie man-up chances in the final quarter. In Sunday's early game, Olson-Fabbro netted two goals in the span of less than a minute to highlight a 4-1 Aggie start to the contest, with 10 different UC Davis players contributing to an 11-4 halftime lead. Tamblyn's two goals â€" one in the first and the other in the final minute of the game â€" marked his first scores as an Aggie. Martel, a true freshman center, scored his first collegiate goal on a 6-on-5 opportunity to start the second quarter. UC Davis, which completed its first East Coast road trip since the 1997 NCAA Championship, returns home to host San Jose State for a 2 p.m. contest on Saturday. That game begins a two-weekend homestand that also includes the Aggie Roundup tournament from Sept. 16-18.
