SAN JOSE, Calif. — A dominant first half and surge in the fourth quarter gave UC Davis men's water polo its second straight win in conference play with a 16-9 victory over San Jose State on Sunday, Oct. 11. The Aggies begin their first WCC season 2-0 and remain one of two teams undefeated in conference play (LMU)

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A productive first half was jumpstarted with a pair of powerplay goals in quarter number one by Colton Fine and Oleg Shatskikh, giving Davis an early 2-0 lead.
  • The Spartans struck back with a response, but Oriol Viñas found the back of the net before Timothy Kerr responded to another by SJSU, allowing the Aggies to finish the first up 4-2.
  • Quarter two was all UC Davis, with Thomas Kiesling getting his first followed by a penalty shot by Lucas Wulfhorst in just the first two minutes of the period.
  • Gabe Bensen and Ned Ginoti also scored in this frame, as the road team found themselves up 8-2 heading into halftime.
  • Back in the pool for the second half, Shatskikh went top shelf for his second of the day, extending his team's lead to seven.
  • But the rest of the quarter belonged to San Jose State, who created a 5-0 run through the last seven minutes to cut the lead to only two, 9-7, heading into quarter four.
  • Looking to slow their opponents momentum, Kerr collected his hat trick while Wulfhorst secured his second of the day to open the fourth.
  • Two minutes later, Kiesling also got a hat trick in response to a Spartan goal, with Viñas breaking up his streak with goal number two.
  • As the seconds began to wind down, Cassius Wolf cashed in on a breakaway attempt for his second of the weekend, putting the finishing touches on a 16-9 victory for UC Davis.

UP NEXT: The Aggies return home for their next two games, starting with a primetime matchup with Pacific on Friday, Oct. 16. The game will be played under the Schaal Aquatics Center lights at 7:00 pm PT and will be streamed on ESPN+.
