NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - Rachel Ahr led a contingent of Aggies with three shots, Crystal Crump, Mandy McKeegan, Andi Damian and Celina Minissian each tested CSUN Jovani McCaskill throughout Friday's Big West Conference opener at Matador Soccer Field in a match that ended in a scoreless draw.
This is the third time in the last four head-to-head meetings that a match involving the Aggies and Matadors needed double overtime. Last year's meeting at Aggie Soccer Field ended with a similar result; in 2013, during another home match, UC Davis scored the game-winner in the 106th minute.
UC Davis will return home to begin prepping for its Oct. 6 Big West home opener, vs. Cal State Fullerton, with a 4-5-3 overall and 0-0-1 league record.
Aggie goalkeeper Alexis Smith ended her evening with five saves and picked up her fourth shutout of the season in the process against a team that has not lost a match at Matador Soccer Field since its Aug. 26 home opener.
UC Davis' defense did a phenomenal job neutralizing CSUN's top three players in Camille Watson, Kourtney Kutscher and Cynthia Sanchez by limiting their clean looks at goal. The trip lead CSUN in total shots and shots on goal; all three finished with two shots with Watson and Kutscher ending their evening with one attempt on goal.
On one end of the field, CSUN's most dangerous goal scorers were neutralized from start to finish. On the other, Crump blasted a shot from 25 yards out, early in the second half, that resulted in a save. Two minutes later, a Damian-created turnover led to her only shot of the night, which McCaskill needed to collect to keep the Aggies off the scoreboard.
Two minutes into overtime, Minissian and Ahr created the most dangerous scoring opportunity, by either team in both extra sessions. After Minissian's shot hit the post and bounced back into play, Ahr followed her teammate's attempt with one of her own that curved right at the last second and flew past the net.
UC Davis will now head home to prep for its first league match of the season when Cal State Fullrton visits campus on Thursday to open a home-heavy portion of the Aggies' schedule. Following that 4 p.m. matchup vs. the Titans, UC Davis will head to Hawai'i for its next road event. When the team returns from the islands, it will compete in three straight home games.
