GLENVIEW, Ill. - Senior Ben Corfee shot an impressive 4-under 68 for the UC Davis men's golf team in the first round on Sunday while freshman Matt Robinson fired a 69 in the second, helping the Aggies move into third place after two rounds of the Windon Memorial hosted by Northwestern.
UC Davis shot back-to-back rounds of 2-under 286 at North Shore Country Club and are 4 under overall, just four shots behind leader Florida (-8) and two back of second-place Eastern Michigan (-6). After the Aggies, it's six shots back to fourth-place Northwestern (+2).
Most teams finished the scheduled 36 holes of play on Sunday but two groups couldn't beat darkness after the tournament was delayed briefly because of lightning. They'll finish up their second rounds on Monday morning before the final round gets underway.
UC Davis is in good position after playing solid throughout the day. Corfee followed his 68 with a 73 and is tied for fifth at 3 under while Robinson is 1 over and tied for 18th after opening the day with a 76. Evan Knight is tied for 13th at 1 under after rounds of 73-70 while Brandon Baumgarten, who shot 74 in each round, and Louie Chen, who went 71-77, are tied for 30th at 4 over.
"It was a very solid day today for the Aggies with everyone contributing," said head coach Cy Williams. "It was good to see all five guys making an impact."
Corfee's round of 68 had a pair of birdies and two bogeys on the front nine before then he turned it on with a bogey-free 4-under back nine. He played his final 14 holes five shots under par. He had two birdies while shooting 73 in the afternoon.
Robinson's 69 in the second round was highlighted by a half-dozen birdies, including two over a three-hole span to close the front nine and then three over a five-hole run on the back. He shot 76 in the first round but was 3 under over his last eight holes.
Knight was even through 12 holes in his first round but had an up-and-down scorecard the rest of the way that showed three birdies, two bogeys and a double-bogey. Still, his 1-over 73 set him up for a strong round of 70 in the afternoon that was sparked by five birdies during a 4-under front nine.
Baumgarten was 1 over on both sides of the course during his first round of 74 and then played a steady round of 74 in the afternoon with a birdie, 14 pars and three bogeys. Chen made his Aggie debut with a 71 in his first round, combining four birdies with 11 pars and just three bogeys. He shot 77 in the second round.
Wisconsin's Jordan Hahn is 5-under and holds the 36-hole lead heading into Monday's final round.
UC Davis will play with Eastern Michigan and Florida and tee off the first hole beginning at 8:06 a.m. (PDT).
