Jet-setting Aggies don't let long trip slow them

Sept. 12, 2016

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The good news is the UC Davis men's golf team successfully made it from the east coast to the west coast in time for the USF Olympic Intercollegiate on Monday morning after finishing play at Duke University in North Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

The better news is the Aggies didn't let the jet-setting travel affect them after they went 13 over through 36 holes of their latest tournament and are tied for fourth with the host Dons at famed Olympic Club.

Brandon Baumgarten fired back-to-back rounds of 1-over 72 on Monday and is tied for 14th to lead UC Davis, which also got a strong day from freshman Matt Robinson, who is tied for 20th at just 1 over after rounds of 72 and 73.

Ben Corfee, whose successful 10-foot putt in darkness at the end of the second round at Duke's Rod Myers Invitational on Saturday has been the talk of the collegiate golf world, is tied for 25th after shooting 72 in the morning and then 74 in the afternoon.

Evan Knight and Nicolas Noya stepped in and joined the Aggies for USF's tournament, with Knight shooting 73 in both rounds to join Corfee at 2 over and in 25th place. Nicolas Noya opened with an 81 but bounced back with a solid 3-over 75 in the second and is tied for 62nd at 12 over.

The Aggies and San Francisco are tied for fourth, 13 strokes behind BYU, which is even and leads Saint Mary's by seven shots. Notre Dame (+10) is in third. Stefano Mazzoli of TCU is 3 under and holds a one-shot lead over four players.

Baumgarten played the final 12 holes of his first round a shot under par to help him post his first 72. He was 3 over in the second after just five holes, and was 4 over with six remaining, but birdied the 13th, 14th and 16th holes to race back near par.

Robinson was 4 over after eight holes in his opening round before blitzing the back nine with three birdies and six pars to help him shoot 72 as well. He had three birdies in the afternoon. Corfee used a trio of birdies to go 1 under on the front nine of his first round and had back-to-back pars on par-5 holes on the back nine of his second round.

Knight had four birdies on Monday while Noya rallied with 2-over scores on both sides of the course during his second round.

The teams will play an afternoon shotgun round beginning at 1:30. The Aggies will play the final round with USF and TCU.
