DURHAM, N.C. - Freshman Matt Robinson shot a 1-under 71 and senior Ben Corfee posted a 72 on Sunday as the UC Davis men's golf team had its best round at the Rod Myers Invitational at Duke University Golf Club and tied for 11th place in the season-opening event.

UC Davis shot a 5-over 293 in the third round, bettering the 13 over it had during Saturday's opening round. The Aggies finished 32 over for the 54-hole tournament, tying with Florida Southern.

Robinson's 71 was his lowest score of the weekend and helped him tied for 32nd at 5 over. Corfee posted a 6-over total and tied for 40th while Brandon Baumgarten led the way for UC Davis with a tie for 23rd after shooting 2 over. He had a 75 on Sunday. Jeremy Sanchez tied for 75th at 19 over after shooting a 75 as well while Ryan Han shot 78 and was 80th at 25 over.

"Brandon and Ben played very solid golf for us for 54 holes and our freshman, Matt Robinson, was very impressive," said head coach Cy Williams. "Just a couple of bad numbers stopped him from having a really high finish in his Aggie debut."

Wake Forest roared to an 11-shot win after finishing 23 under for the weekend. Liberty (-12) took second while Florida State (-10) was third. Liberty's Kieran Vincent shot three rounds of 67, was 15 under overall, and posted a six-stroke win.

Robinson capped his first UC Davis event with a strong opening nine holes. Starting on the 10th hole of the 7,154-yard course, Robinson shot back-to-back birdies on the 14th and 15th holes to go to 2 under early on. He made his turn a shot below par and then had a birdie, seven pars and a bogey on his back nine to come in with a 71.

Corfee was even over his first nine holes, sparking his start with an eagle on the par-5 14th. He matched Robinson's back nine to shoot par for the day. Baumgarten had two birdies in his round of 75 while Sanchez had five. Han had a pair of birdies while playing his final six holes at 1 under.

This weekend's tournament also brought UC Davis some attention from the national golf media after Corfee, fighting to finish 36 holes on Saturday, drained a 10-foot putt in darkness after fellow competitors, tournament officials and others helped illuminate his try by using the lights on their mobile phones. His playing partners, facing longer putts, opted to mark their balls and finish on Sunday morning. Golfweek, with the help of Williams, chronicled the unusual finish.

The Aggies hit the road soon after their round in order to travel back to the west coast where they'll play in the Olympic Invitational, hosted by San Francisco, starting on Monday. Corfee, Baumgarten and Robinson will be joined by Evan Knight and Nicolas Noya.
