June 18, 2016 116th U.S. Open Leader Board
OAKMONT, Pa. - Eight years after helping lead the UC Davis men's golf team into the Big West Conference, Matt Marshall is marching down a different path after making the cut on Saturday at the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club.
Marshall, who played for the Aggies from 2006-08, shot rounds of 2-over 72 and 73 over the course of Friday and Saturday to earn a spot among the top 60 places and make the cut into the final two rounds after finishing 5 over. He shot 75 in Saturday afternoon's third round and is tied for 61st heading into Sunday's final 18 holes at 10 over.
Shane Lowery (-5) has a two-stroke lead with four holes of his second round remaining to be played. Weather suspended Thursday's opening round, forcing the USGA to try and jam the tournament's four rounds into the final three days.
Marshall joined current UC Davis men's assistant golf coach Tyler Raber at the U.S. Open as the pair became the first Aggies believed to participate in one of golf's premiere events.
Raber, who qualified through sectional play in Daly City two weeks ago, matched Marshall with a 72 in the first round before shooting 78 in the second and missing the cut at 11 over. Still, the former Aggie standout made UC Davis history with his appearance alongside Marshall in the event.
Marshall had three birdies in his opening round, including one on the par-5 fourth hole when he flew in a chip from the rough just off the green. He also birdied the par-3 13th and par-3 18th hole. He added two birdies in his second round and another in the third.
Raber had a steady opening round which saw him even through his first nine holes which included a birdie on the par-4 17th. He had just four bogeys on Friday, a strong feat considering the legendary rough conditions that make the U.S. Open notorious for producing high scores.
Raber was 5 over on the front nine of Oakmont Country Club but played the back nine well once again, collecting seven pars.
Marshall is among elite company after making a cut that sent Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose, Ernie Els and other notables home early.
Final-round groupings will be determined after the completion of the third round on Sunday morning.
Marshall, who has been playing on the MacKenzie Tour in Canada while splitting time as a winemaker in Oregon and as an assistant golf professional, was an All-Division I Independent second-team pick in 2007 and later played on the Aggies' first team to compete at the Big West Championships after the university completed its reclassification the previous year.
Raber, a 2008 graduate of Davis High School, was an All-Big West honorable mention pick in 2010 before earning first-team honors as a junior in 2011, and again as a senior in 2013 after redshirting in 2012. Raber, who advanced to the round of 16 at the 2012 British Amateur Championship, qualified as an individual for the NCAA Regional during his senior campaign.
