LONG BEACH, Calif. - Kyle Clancy won the high jump and finished second in two other events to finish the decathlon's first day in third place while three Aggie women are in the top eight in the heptathlon, as UC Davis had a strong start at the Big West Multi Championships at Long Beach State on Friday.
Clancy, a freshman from Davis, scored 3,792 points over the first five events and is just 107 points behind leader Herman Day of Long Beach State. Erinn Beattie, who tied for first in the high jump, tallied 2,820 points in the heptathlon's opening four events and is in sixth place, while teammate Tori Edwards (2,770) and Jaleah Calvillo (2,635) are in seventh and eighth, respectively.
The multi-event championships serve as the first two events of the Big West Track and Field Championships, which will continue with the full meet next weekend at Long Beach State.
Clancy put together an outstanding effort on the first day of just his second collegiate decathlon. Clancy, who is already second all-time on the program's all-time high jump list after going 7 feet, 0.25 inches earlier this season, cleared 6-11 on his third attempt before missing on his try to tie his career-best. The first-place finish on Friday was worth 906 points.
He added second-place showings in the 100-meter dash (11.06 seconds) and in the long jump (23-5.25, wind-aided), scoring 847 points in each. He was 14th in the shot put and 10th in the day's final event, the 400-meter dash. Saturday's events include the 110 high hurdles, discus, pole vault, javelin and 1,500.
Beattie cleared 5-6.5 in the high jump to tie Tayler Fleming from UC Riverside for first and score 842 points. She added 762 points with her seventh-place finish in the opening 100 hurdles and then finished her day with 448 points in the shot put and 724 in the 200.
She led three Aggies fighting for top-eight placings and team points toward the track championship. Edwards is just 50 points behind Beattie on the leaderboard, highlighting her day with a third-place finish in the shot put that netted her 600 points. Edwards tied for seventh in the high jump for her second-best finish.
Calvillo enjoyed her best event in the high jump, tying for fourth at 5-3. That scored her 736 points. Her 2,625 total points give her a slight lead over three competitors, who are each within 10 points heading into Saturday's final three events - the long jump, javelin and 800.
Riley Cooks of Long Beach State has 3,435 points for the first-day lead.
Saturday's decathlon continues at 11 a.m. while the heptathlon will resume at 1 p.m.
UC Davis will also have several athletes in action at the Sacramento State Open on Saturday.
