LAWRENCE, Kan. - Erika Barr is on her way to her first NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after turning in a time of 10 minutes, 12.41 seconds in the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the West Prelim Meet at the University of Kansas, and leading the UC Davis contingent during Friday's competition.
The top three finishers in each of the three heats automatically qualified for next month's meet at the University of Oregon. Barr, a senior from Simi Valley, was fifth in her race but had the second-fastest time of the remaining runners in the event, securing one of the three spots that advanced by time.
Barr was not in the lead pack for most of the race but stayed within striking distance. She was seventh with two laps remaining before passing Emily Scharmann of UCLA on the seventh lap and then Katie Mahoney of Eastern Washington on the bell lap to move up into fifth.
Her time was her second-fastest of the season, trailing only her career-best of 10:08.63 which she picked up at this year's Stanford Invitational. She ranks second all-time at UC Davis and was making her second regional appearance. Barr entered the meet ranked 26th nationally.
Barr, the two-time defending Big West champion, was a bright spot for the Aggies who had 11 of their 13 regional qualifiers in action on Friday. The meet was scheduled to start on Thursday but inclement weather forced suspension of all events and for officials to put together a revised schedule. The meet was condensed so that only one round was run for events that were scheduled for two - with different advancement rules put in place - and the schedule was moved to a morning start. Saturday's schedule has also been moved from the afternoon and evening to the morning.
The early start first affected the Aggies' two 10,000-meter runners, Christine Hoffman and Trevor Halsted, whose original start was set for Thursday night. They ran, however, at 6 a.m. (PDT) and 6:40, respectively. Hoffman, the 2015 Big West champion, qualified with the 42nd-fastest time in the NCAA and finished with an 18th-place regional finish after crossing in 34:59.96. Halsted finished 38th in his race with a time of 30:56.25.
For the UC Davis women, Rianna Goins was 43rd in the 800 (2:15.63), Emma Redick was 45th in the 400 hurdles (1:04.33), Erinn Beattie took 34th in the high jump (5-5.25) and Michaela Mundt placed 45th in the hammer throw (171-6).
Jason Chandler finished 45th in the 400 hurdles (55.30) for the Aggies' only other entry on the track. Teammates Basil Okoroike and Drew Xandrine-Anderson will compete in the triple jump on Saturday morning.
The top 12 finishers in each event qualified for the NCAA Finals in Oregon, which will be held June 8-11 at historic Hayward Field. The women's semifinal steeplechase will run on June 9.
