EL MACERO, Calif. - Patrick Soli shot a 2-over 72 on Friday while teammate Jesse Bratz, playing as an individual, matched him as both Aggies are tied for seventh while the defending champion and co-host UC Davis men's golf team ended the first day of the windy El Macero Classic tied for third at El Macero Country Club.
The Aggies shot a 16-over 304 team score and are tied with TCU for third place, one shot behind second-place Oregon State (+15) and 13 back of leader Texas Tech (+3).
There was plenty of sunshine during Friday's first round but there was also lots of wind as gusts of between 20-30 mph buffeted the course throughout the day. The conditions wreaked havoc with scores averaging 78.7 strokes among the 90 players representing 15 teams.
"The course definitely won today but it was a great first day for the event. Everything was in fantastic condition," said head coach Cy Williams. "Our guys have been playing really well and we have 36 holes left. We're going to be in this thing, so it's comeback time for the Aggies."
Texas Tech's Federico Zuchetti was the only player to shoot under par, firing a 2-under 70 to lead teammate Hurly Long and Ryan Brooks, who fired 70s, by two strokes.
Nicolas Noya posted a solid round for the Aggies with his 75, putting him in a tie for 14th place. Defending medalist Luke Vivolo opened with a 76 and is tied for 20th, Ben Corfee shot 79 and is tied for 40th and freshman Ryan Knop came in with an 82 to tie for 74th.
Evan Knight and Brandon Baumgarten, playing as individuals, shot 80 and 84, respectively, and are tied for 53rd and 83rd.
Soli was 1 over on each side of El Macero Country Club, picking up birdies on the par-5, 555-yard fifth hole and the par-5, 517-yard 18th. Soli played the final seven holes a shot under par. Bratz was even on his turn before jumping to 4 over after 13 holes. However, a birdie on the par4 14th and another on the par4 17th keyed a 2-under run over his last five holes to bring him in with a 74.
Noya got off to a good start with a birdie on the par-4 first hole and added another at No. 5. He was 1 over after nine holes and played the back nine just two shots above par. Vivolo had two early birdies and then another on the 18th, while Corfee joined Vivolo and Soli with a birdie on the last hole. Knop, who birdied the par-5 15th, was 3 over on the front.
Knight had one birdie and Baumgarten had two to highlight their opening rounds.
UC Davis is co-hosting the event with Nevada. The Aggies will tee off the second round beginning at 10:45 a.m. on Saturday and will play with Marquette and Sacramento State.
